She won her title on August 9, 2024, after beating Yang Liu of China in the women’s 66 kg final. Her win brought big attention and a lot of debate about her gender eligibility, but the IOC later confirmed she was born female and allowed to compete. This week, Imane Khelif said she is training for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and has “surprises” planned for her comeback. Her statement comes as World Boxing announced new mandatory sex tests and as reports say the next Olympics may include a full ban on transgender women.

Imane Khelif’s comeback plan and her fight with new rules

First drawing worldwide notice in March 2023, Imane Khelif was thrown from the Women’s World Boxing Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after she allegedly failed a gender eligibility test. Once again in the spotlight at the Paris Olympics in August 2024, she defeated Angela Carini of Italy in a 46-second fight on August 1st, 2024. Carini subsequently quit. She then took her gold medal on August 9, 2024, causing a great deal of internet criticism. Many questioned how she was cleared, but the IOC said she was born female and had always competed as a woman. In her latest remarks, Imane Khelif said she is determined to win another Olympic medal and is working on “many surprises” for her return. She said she continues to face “campaigns” and “unfair decisions” and has taken her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).Her main challenge now is the new World Boxing rule. The federation revealed on May 30, 2025, that before she could resume competition, she had to pass a gender or genetic test. Under Kirsty Coventry, the IOC is considering both a complete ban on transgender women at the 2028 Los Angeles Games and maybe fresh rules for competitors with variations of sexual development (DSD).
