U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> signed an executive order Friday to get rid of tariffs on a broad swath of commodities, including beef, coffee and tropical fruits. It\u2019s part of a response to pressure from consumers who complain prices are too high.<\/p>\n

The move comes after voters in off-year elections earlier this month cited economic concerns as their top issue, resulting in big wins for Democrats in races in Virginia and New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The president signed the executive order after announcing that the U.S. had reached framework agreements with Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Argentina designed to ease import levies on agricultural products produced in those countries.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s executive order amends his April 2 move to impose global \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on dozens of countries due to what he declared a national emergency over persistent trade deficits.<\/p>\n

The order says Trump made the determination to \u201cmodify the scope of products\u201d subject to the global tariffs after considering factors including \u201ccurrent domestic demand for certain products, and current domestic capacity to produce\u201d those items.<\/p>\n

The executive order also removes tariffs on tea, fruit juice, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and certain fertilizers. Some of the products covered aren\u2019t produced in the United States.<\/p>\n

Trump and his administration have been long insisted that tariffs don\u2019t increase consumer prices,\u00a0despite economic evidence\u00a0to the contrary.<\/p>\n

Record-high\u00a0beef\u00a0prices\u00a0have been a particular concern, and\u00a0Trump\u00a0has said he intended to take action to try to lower them. Trump\u2019s\u00a0tariffs on Brazil, a major\u00a0beef\u00a0exporter, have been a factor.<\/p>\n

Trump suggested earlier this week that he\u2019d be lowering tariffs on coffee to help increase its importation.<\/p>\n

The amendments don\u2019t apply to Trump\u2019s separate, fentanyl-related tariff order for Canada, Mexico and China.<\/p>\n

Those tariffs, as well as the global \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs, are at risk of being struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court<\/a>, which is expected to rule by the end of this year on a case centred on Trump\u2019s executive authority to impose tariffs under emergency powers.<\/p>\n

Trump has said it would be \u201cdevastating\u201d for the U.S. economy if the high court rules against him in the case.<\/p>\n
