It then did a few laps before it finally settled down. It did not appear to be shopping.

“I was actually surprised because I’ve never seen one that close up besides hopping around on the ground. But flying right over your head … We have low ceilings here,” Wykes said. “It was massive.”

According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, ravens are on average about the size of a hawk, which could range between 56 to 69 centimetres in length.

Wykes says although it was in an all-you-can-eat buffet opportunity, the bird seemed unhappy and stressed. Wykes says he called authorities for help and two conservation officers responded.

“They were tromping around here with huge fishing nets,” Wykes said. “Looked like they were on the shores … trying to get some salmon.”

Conservation officers answered the call for help to remove the raven from the store. (Submitted by Malcolm Knutson)

Jeff Bond happened to be in the store shopping for chili ingredients and he saw it all 一 the raven hanging out above the lettuce, shoppers laughing, and conservation officers waiting.

“It was a little bit out of reach for the nets,” Bond said. “So they were kind of waiting for it to … maybe fly by. But it was interesting. I mean, it seemed to have the upper hand in evading authorities,” he said.

The officers were eventually able to safely remove the bird after about 45 minutes, according to the store’s owner.

“It seemed like kind of a unique northern experience,” Bond said.

“I was rooting for the raven. I was hoping, ‘eh, just hop on the shoulder here and I’ll give you a lift to get you out of this situation.’”

Listen to this article Estimated 3 minutes The audio version of this article is generated by text-to-speech, a…

[26
49,48,66,323
0":"post-284853","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-science","11":"tag-wildlife
["GET
