{"id":285553,"date":"2025-11-15T22:28:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T22:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/285553\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T22:28:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T22:28:16","slug":"editorial-three-myths-about-the-clean-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/285553\/","title":{"rendered":"EDITORIAL: Three myths about the &#8216;clean economy&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The federal Liberals \u2013 starting with former prime minister Justin Trudeau and continuing under Mark Carney \u2013 sold their climate strategy to Canadians based on three myths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">First, that it would be a huge job creator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Second, that Canada would hit the government\u2019s industrial greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Third, that most Canadian households would be financially better off as a result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To the contrary, a recent study by the fiscally conservative Fraser Institute estimates that over the past decade, the federal, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and B.C. governments have spent or foregone revenues of $158 billion in inflation-adjusted 2024 dollars to create a mere 68,000 \u201cclean energy\u201d jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s an estimated cost of $2.3 million per job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cGovernments, activists and special interests groups have been making a lot of claims about the opportunities of a clean economic transition, but after a decade of policy interventions and more than $150 billion in taxpayers\u2019 money, the results are underwhelming,\u201d said Elmira Aliakbari, co-author of the study titled The Fiscal Cost of Canada\u2019s Low-Carbon Economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A second Fraser Institute study \u2013 Sizing Canada\u2019s Clean Economy \u2013 concluded that after almost a decade of\u00a0 federal and provincial\u00a0 governments funnelling billions of dollars into the \u201cclean economy\u201d from 2014 to 2023, its percentage of Canada\u2019s total economy of $3.3 trillion barely moved from 3.1% of GDP to 3.6%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As for meeting federal emission targets, the Canadian Climate Institute and the Trottier Energy Institute at Polytechnique Montreal\u00a0recently concluded the Liberals\u2019 target of reducing Canada\u2019s emissions by at least 40% compared to 2005 levels in 2030 is out of reach and that the government will achieve, at best, half of that.<\/p>\n<p>RECOMMENDED VIDEO<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The parliamentary budget office \u2013 a watchdog on federal spending \u2013 reported that before Carney cancelled the consumer carbon tax, most Canadian families were in fact paying more in carbon taxes than they received in rebates, when factoring in the negative impact of the carbon tax on the Canadian economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During the last election, Carney promised to replace the consumer carbon tax with an \u201cimproved and tightened\u201d industrial carbon tax that would benefit both consumers and businesses.
