Most people came away from this year\u2019s\u00a0The Naked Gun\u00a0revival<\/a> with a sense of, at bare minimum, relief: \u201cThank god,\u201d the general consensus seemed to be, \u201cThat nobody involved in bringing back a beloved property from our collective childhoods seems to have totally embarrassed themselves in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said general vibe does not, apparently, extend to original\u00a0Naked Gun\u00a0director David Zucker, who recently gave an interview to\u00a0<\/a>Women\u2019s World<\/a>\u00a0that was ostensibly about promoting his new online comedy course MasterCrash, but which also seemed like an irresistible opportunity for Zucker to talk hefty amounts of shit about Seth MacFarlane, Akiva Schaffer, and everybody else involved in the Liam Neeson revival of the series. (Which Zucker created, along with his brother Jerry Zucker, and long-time comedy partner Jim Abrahams.) \u201cWe originated our own style,\u201d Zucker said of the spoof brand he and his collaborators invented, and then pursued across 50 years of making movies. \u201cAnd we did that so well that it looks easy, evidently. People started copying it, like [producer] Seth MacFarlane for the new Naked Gun. He totally missed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Zucker had worked on plans over the years for a fourth\u00a0Naked Gun\u00a0movie (following 1994\u2019s lackluster\u00a0The Final Insult), they never came to fruition, and neither he nor his brother were involved in the new movie\u2019s production. (Abrahams died last November.<\/a>) And, if we\u2019re being honest, Zucker sounds pretty pissed off about the whole thing, often pulling unrelated parts of the interview back to a get in a little more shit-talking about the Schaffer-directed film. Let\u2019s run down the various jabs he tosses in: \u201cThey tried to replace Leslie Nielsen in the new\u00a0Naked Gun, and you can\u2019t replace him. No one else can do that.\u201d \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t spend too much money on comedies, and one of our rules is about technical pizzazz. Big budgets and comedy are opposites, and in the new\u00a0Naked Gun, you could see that they spent a lot of money on scenes full of technical pizzazz while trying to copy our style.\u201d \u201cEverybody\u2019s in it for the money now, and that feels like the only reason why they wanted to do a new\u00a0Naked Gun.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, yeah: Not a fan.<\/p>\n
