Swiss electrification and automation technology company ABB has forged some new business-to-business relationships with other NASCAR sponsors such as Stanley Black & Decker\u2019s DeWalt brand, the latest example of one of the sport\u2019s longtime marketing calling cards. <\/p>\n

ABB entered NASCAR in the summer of 2024 with a title-sponsorship of the in-house-made EV that NASCAR\u2019s R&D team put together<\/a> as it explored that new technology. The company has been in racing since at least 2018 when it became title sponsor of the all-electric Formula E series. The company also became a major sponsor in 2024 for NASCAR\u2019s Chicago street race, though it didn\u2019t return to that role for this year\u2019s running. <\/p>\n

In the last year, many automakers in the U.S. have scaled back their original EV ambitions, which has raised questions about how much NASCAR will continue to experiment with the technology. But NASCAR President Steve O\u2019Donnell praised ABB\u2019s deal with the league during in Phoenix this month, and ABB VP\/Strategic Partnerships Chris Shigas said the sponsorship is still going strong from his perspective. At Phoenix, ABB activated in the NASCAR Experience area on the midway with a pit crew competition using the 1,360-horsepower EV. NASCAR has said that it aims for its operations to be carbon-neutral by 2035, and ABB is working with the racing company on several projects to try to reach that goal. Some of the new ones include installing a new energy management system at NASCAR\u2019S R&D center near Charlotte to try to figure out if it can be valuable enough to scale to its owned racetracks and offices. ABB also has installed EV chargers at NASCAR\u2019s HQ in Daytona Beach, Fla., and is looking at how it can improve the electrical grid for Homestead-Miami Speedway given the knack for major weather events to take place in that region.<\/p>\n

In addition to its work with NASCAR, Shigas says ABB is finding business from other sponsors in the sport like DeWalt. He confirmed that the deal ABB is now working on with DeWalt stemmed from meeting the company in racing and said that the two firms have been visiting each other\u2019s factories and offices to see how they can sell their products and services to each other. NASCAR and other stakeholders in the industry have long claimed that there is a greater effort put toward making those sort of B2B introductions in racing than in some stick-and-ball sports. <\/p>\n

TO THE \u2018HEART OF AMERICA\u2019: Shigas: \u201cWe\u2019ve been visiting each other\u2019s factories because we\u2019re looking at the tools we need for our United States factories \u2014 we have 40 facilities across the U.S. \u2014 and obviously to meet the electrical needs that DeWalt is using in their factories [they\u2019re considering ABB\u2019s products]. They do an amazing thing: They go on energy treasure hunts, so they go through their factory and look where we can make cost saving in our energy, and then we get that money back and that energy efficiency becomes sustainability because the cleanest kilowatt is the one you don\u2019t use.\u201d <\/p>\n

He said ABB is also working with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., which makes a special tire for the EV NASCAR car. It started doing media and thought-leadership events with ABB and invited the company to the Goodyear Cotton Bowl last season and has done so again for this year.
