When COLA goes into effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/86222589007.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>US to phase out most paper checks for federal benefits<\/p>\n<p>The federal government will begin phasing out paper checks for Social Security and other federal payments by September 30.<\/p>\n<p>Cheddar<\/p>\n<p>More than 2 million Social Security recipients in Michigan, and millions more nationwide, are in line to receive a cost of living adjustment, or COLA, starting in January 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/personalfinance\/2025\/10\/24\/2026-social-security-cola-inflation-increase-medicare\/86794713007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Social Security Administration announced<\/a> earlier this fall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by about $56 per month starting in January,&#8221; the U.S. Social Security Administration said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/en\/press\/releases\/2025-10-24.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oct. 24 release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Payments will increase 2.8% at the beginning of the year for recipients of Social Security; Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI); and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/11\/16\/social-security-changes-2026\/87305422007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 2.8% COLA increase won&#8217;t be the only change in 2026<\/a>. In addition, there will be a higher earnings limits for people who retire early.<\/p>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/policy\/docs\/factsheets\/cong_stats\/2024\/mi.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2.33 million people<\/a> in Michigan receive some form of Social Security benefits, including about 1.7 million retired workers, as of December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to expect for the 2026 COLA changes:<\/p>\n<p>In addition to benefit increases, here&#8217;s what else is new in 2026<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, here&#8217;s what to expect in 2026:<\/p>\n<p>The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax will increase to $184,500.The earnings limit for workers who are younger than full retirement age (67 years old) will increase to $24,480. (there will be a $1 deduction for each $2 earned over $24,480.)The earnings limit for people reaching their full retirement age in 2026 will increase to $65,160. (there will be a $1 deduction for each $3 earned over $65,160, until the month the worker turns full retirement age.)There is no limit on earnings for workers who are at full retirement age or older for the entire year.When will the COLA adjustment take effect?<\/p>\n<p>The 2.8% increase will begin in January 2026. Increased SSI payments will begin with the Dec. 31, 2025, payment, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n<p>What is a COLA notice?<\/p>\n<p>Most beneficiaries are set to receive a COLA notice \u2014 information regarding the COLA increase \u2014 in the &#8220;Message Center&#8221; of their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/myaccount\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">my\u00a0Social Security<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0account in late November 2025.<\/p>\n<p>How can I log into &#8216;my\u00a0Social Security&#8217; account for updates?<\/p>\n<p>My Social Security accounts allow recipients to manage their personal record including the COLA notice or messages securely.<\/p>\n<p>New accounts are created using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/id.me\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ID.me<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/login.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Login.gov<\/a>, If unable to create your personal\u00a0my\u00a0Social Security\u00a0account, make an appointment with your local Social Security office.<\/p>\n<p>What is the retirement age?<\/p>\n<p>Seniors may begin receiving social security benefits as early as 62, though they will be limited benefits.
