Image: \u00a9 Roland Halbe<\/p>\n<p>Funded through donations, the irregular flow of contributions determined the project\u2019s design as four independent volumes were built in phases. The first two phases, which established the center of the project, were completed within two years and have been operational since, while the remaining structures were finished 16 years later.<\/p>\n<p>The design was inspired by a volcanic landscape, in which it features massive, rough forms that contrast with the built surroundings. Narrow cracks between the structures, filled with sculptural metal and glass, filter daylight to create a minimalist, spiritual interior.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"floatbox\" href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/i7\/i7737geo9tp1wigm.jpeg?auto=compress%2Cformat\" title=\"The 2025 World Building of the Year winner The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Center of Las Chumberas by Fernando Menis. With no windows, the building is illuminated by an overhead, cross-shaped aperture. Here, chipped concrete was mixed with volcanic stones, which function to absorb sound and, alongside smooth or rough exposed concrete, achieves a sound control comparable to an opera house. The building manages to masterfully accommodate symbolic and everyday needs of the community of which the architect is a part.
