Spotify\u2019s announcement of a new \u201cfewer repeats\u201d shuffle feature has users celebrating\u2014and joking that the company finally admitted its old shuffle was never truly random.<\/p>\n

Many Spotify users celebrating the change are those who expressed feelings of being \u201cgaslighted\u201d by the original shuffle feature. So what gives?<\/p>\n

What is Spotify\u2019s \u201cfewer repeats\u201d shuffle feature?<\/p>\n

According to a press release<\/a> on Nov. 13, Spotify<\/a> announced a new feature that will change the default shuffle setting.<\/p>\n

Under the old shuffle logic, every song in a playlist had an equal chance of playing next, which often meant listeners heard the same tracks multiple times in close succession.<\/p>\n

With the new approach, Spotify will remember what listeners recently played and avoid repeating those songs too soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve also updated our default Shuffle so you\u2019ll get\u00a0Fewer Repeats\u00a0when you listen. This version takes your recent listening into account, so songs you heard recently are less likely to repeat soon, helping your playlists stay fresh and surprising,\u201d the release reads.<\/p>\n

Premium users now have the option to toggle the fewer repeats feature on or off in the app\u2019s settings.<\/p>\n

How did users react to the shuffle change?<\/p>\n

On social media, Spotify users joked that the update confirmed what they\u2019ve suspected for years: that the company\u2019s shuffle wasn\u2019t really shuffling.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Spotify finally admits their \u2018shuffle\u2019 just plays the same 30 tracks. And if you restart it, there\u2019s no memory, so you get the same songs preferred again,\u201d X user @ChuckReynolds<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n
