\n\tThe cause of death has been revealed for Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actress Diane Ladd<\/a>. According to a death certificate obtained by People<\/a>, Ladd died as a result of acute on chronic hypoxic respiratory failure, a condition where the lungs cannot provide enough oxygen to the blood.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe publication also reported the certificate noted that Ladd had an interstitial lung disease, which had been going on for years. Another contributing factor was esophageal dysmotility.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 89-year-old Ladd died Nov. 3\u00a0at her home in Ojai, CA, according to her daughter,\u00a0Laura Dern<\/a>, who was at her bedside.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLadd is best known for her memorable turns in Martin Scorsese\u2019s\u00a0Alice Doesn\u2019t Live Here Anymore, Roman Polanski\u2019s\u00a0Chinatown\u00a0and David Lynch\u2019s\u00a0Wild at Heart<\/a>, among others. <\/p>\n

\n\tShe portrayed Ida Sessions in Chinatown, a pivotal character who helps lead Jack Nicholson\u2019s Jake Giddes to the truth behind the murder of Hollis Mulwray \u2014 the film\u2019s central mystery.<\/p>\n

\n\tScorsese\u2019s\u00a0Alice Doesn\u2019t Live Here Anymore\u00a0brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination. In it, she defined the Southern crackerjack Flo, a waitress who works alongside Ellen Burstyn\u2019s Alice. The later role was played by Polly Holliday in the TV sitcom\u00a0Alice.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer second Oscar nomination was for the role of Marietta in Lynch\u2019s\u00a0Wild At Heart\u00a0(1990). In the film, Ladd plays Marietta, Lula\u2019s vengeful mother who hires a hitman to kill Sailor, played by Nicolas Cage, after the duo runs off together. Lynch\u2019s film won the Palme d\u2019Or at Cannes that year.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer third Oscar nomination came for\u00a0Rambling Rose\u00a0(1991), in which she co-starred along with Robert Duval, Lucas Haas and Dern.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLadd\u2019s other memorable film work includes holiday favorite\u00a0Christmas Vacation\u00a0(1989),\u00a0Ghosts of Mississippi\u00a0(1996),\u00a0Primary Colors\u00a0(1998),\u00a028 Days\u00a0(2000) and\u00a0Joy\u00a0(2015).<\/p>\n

\n\tShe starred in dozens more films and television shows, including Stephen King\u2019s 15-hour 2004 ABC miniseries,\u00a0Kingdom Hospital, playing psychic Mrs. Druse.<\/p>\n

\n\tMore recently, she was seen in Lifetime\u2019s Movie of the Week\u00a0Montana Sky\u00a0and in the film\u00a0The World\u2019s Fastest Indian\u00a0co-starring Anthony Hopkins.<\/p>\n
