In the three years since, the herd appears to have halved again in size.<\/p>\n<p>New estimates released last week by the NWT government put the Bathurst herd at 3,609 animals, an exceedingly bleak all-time low.<\/p>\n<p>That estimate represents a 47-percent drop in three years. However, this naturally fluctuating abundance cycle appears to have been interrupted by increasing human and natural pressures,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nt.ca\/ecc\/sites\/ecc\/files\/resources\/bathurst_caribou_management_plan_aug_2021_1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 2021 herd management plan<\/a> asserted.<\/p>\n<p>Even four years ago, the herd was thought to be at a \u201ccritically low\u201d size. (Estimating the number of animals in a herd involves multiple counts with different techniques, a process the GNWT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nt.ca\/ecc\/en\/services\/barren-ground-caribou\/population-surveys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">documents on its website<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther work is ongoing\u201d to investigate the factors behind the decreasing size of the Bathurst herd, the GNWT stated last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GNWT will meet with co-management partners over the coming weeks and months to review these results and discuss next steps to protect the herds,\u201d the territory added.<\/p>\n<p>Environment minister Jay Macdonald was quoted as saying: \u201cTogether, we are committed to strengthening conservation efforts and increase the numbers of these precious animals, tied so closely to the life in North.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While most of Canada\u2019s caribou herds have shrunk in recent years, only the George River herd in Labrador and northern Quebec has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/polar-knowledge\/publications\/aqhaliat\/volume-4\/caribou.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suffered a collapse on the same scale<\/a> as the Bathurst, going from an estimated 800,000 animals in the 1990s to fewer than 10,000 now.<\/p>\n<p>Of all herds, only the Porcupine herd in Yukon, Alaska and parts of the northwestern NWT is thought to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/featured-images\/2024-arctic-report-card-migratory-arctic-caribou-populations-have\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at or near an all-time high<\/a> \u2013 but the United States\u2019 move to open up drilling in Alaska\u2019s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/trump-presidency-porcupine-caribou-herd-1.7378921\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">could fundamentally alter the herd\u2019s calving grounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763484920_623_thumbnail.jpeg\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"pictogram visualization\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The GNWT also released new data for the Bluenose-East caribou herd last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTg1OCwxNiw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.debeersgroup.com\/careers\/current-vacancies\/jobdetail?jobId=b865a977-d101-4a68-b5c4-9d58f4f05925\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Gahcho-Kue_Welder.png\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTgzNiwxNiw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61559727125302\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/The-Underground_FINAL_Oct16.png\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While that herd\u2019s estimated numbers have also fallen over the past quarter of a century, there appears to be more fluctuation in its fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the GNWT, the 2025 Bluenose-East population estimate is 28,759 adult caribou, lower than the 2023 estimate of 39,525 but higher than the 2021 estimate of 23,202.<\/p>\n<p>For both the Bathurst and Bluenose-East surveys, the GNWT said conditions were good and it has a \u201chigh degree of confidence in the results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest estimates for other barren-ground caribou herds are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nt.ca\/ecc\/en\/services\/barren-ground-caribou\/population-surveys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the GNWT\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Advertisement.
