\n President Donald Trump on Tuesday dismissed a question about the 2018 murder of Jamal Khashoggi<\/a>, claiming that the Saudi dissident journalist was \u201cextremely controversial\u201d and that raising the subject in his meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was meant to embarrass his visitor.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou\u2019re mentioning somebody that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn\u2019t like that gentleman that you\u2019re talking about. Whether you liked him or didn\u2019t like him, things happen,\u201d Trump said in the Oval Office.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump went on to insist Prince bin Salman \u2014 who the CIA assessed likely ordered the murder<\/a> \u2014 wasn\u2019t involved.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that. You don\u2019t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that,\u201d Trump said.\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked in the Oval Office about Khashoggi\u2019s murder, the crown prince said \u201cit\u2019s painful and it\u2019s a huge mistake\u201d and defended the investigation.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAbout the journalist, it\u2019s really painful to hear anyone that been losing his life for no real purpose or not in a legal way, and it\u2019s been painful for us in Saudi Arabia,\u201d Prince bin Salman said.\n <\/p>\n

\n He added that Saudi Arabia \u201cdid all the right steps of investigation\u201d and that \u201cwe are doing our best that this doesn\u2019t happen again.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Tuesday marks the prince\u2019s first visit<\/a> to Washington since 2018, months before Khashoggi\u2019s murder at a Saudi consulate in Turkey.\n <\/p>\n

\n The CIA assessment released in 2021 found the prince approved the assassination of the Washington Post columnist, though he has long denied any involvement.\n <\/p>\n
