Clay Higgins, the only lawmaker to vote against the bipartisan bill to force the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, defended his opposition on Tuesday, saying the legislation was written in such a way that it might harm innocent people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000327qe53422ret@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt abandons 250 years of criminal justice procedure in America. As written, this bill reveals and injures thousands of innocent people \u2013 witnesses, people who provided alibis, family members, etc,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/repclayhiggins\/status\/1990868089056219267?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a> after casting his vote against the bill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000427qe1e6e4wcs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While other Republicans had voiced similar concerns about the measure \u2013 including House Speaker Mike Johnson \u2013 Higgins\u2019 decision to formally vote against it represented a remarkable break from the rest of the House, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/18\/politics\/epstein-files-vote-house\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed the measure 427-1<\/a>. Senate Republican leader John Thune said soon after that he expects his chamber to take the measure up \u201cfairly quickly\u201d \u2013 perhaps even later Tuesday \u2013 and Trump has indicated he would sign it into law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51go70000b3b6n6osr2crp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Higgins, a member of the House Oversight Committee from Louisiana, noted that panel\u2019s \u201cthorough\u201d Epstein probe, and indicated he would only support the House-passed bill if it came back with changes from the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000527qe7edkfj43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf the Senate amends the bill to properly address privacy of victims and other Americans, who are named but not criminally implicated, then I will vote for that bill when it comes back to the House,\u201d Higgins said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000627qefuw34v2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That does not appear likely. While Johnson said that he had spoken with Thune about amending the bill after it passes in the House so that it better protects survivors, Thune indicated that his chamber was unlikely to make changes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51czkl00003b6n4o728rk6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think, when a bill comes out of the House 427 to 1, and the president has said he\u2019s going to sign it, I\u2019m not sure that amending it is, is in the cards,\u201d Thune said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000727qe9rm59x6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Higgins told CNN\u2019s Manu Raju last week that he planned to vote against the bill even as the tide turned and more Republicans said they would back it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzh000827qe9yv8dphk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He told Raju that Trump didn\u2019t have a \u201cgood relationship\u201d with Epstein and denied that the president was trying to kill the bill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmi51cwzi000927qec7f52afv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not the White House and the president, it\u2019s people that stand for long-standing criminal justice procedures that this bill does not observe. If you support 200 years of criminal justice precedent on how this type of investigation moves forward, then you support what we\u2019re doing in the Oversight Committee, not what\u2019s being pushed in this petition,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"GOP Rep.
