\n\tNew Money is Estonian writer-director-producer Rain Rannu<\/a>\u2018s fifth feature and a follow-up to his 2023 dramedy Free Money. And it asks a question many would love to have to debate: What would you do if you had 50 million? In this case, it is euros, which amounts to about $58 million at current exchange rates.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film had its international<\/a> premiere in the Baltic Competition<\/a> of the\u00a029th edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival<\/a>\u00a0(P\u00d6FF) on Tuesday evening and drew a packed house and much laughter.<\/p>\n

\n\tM\u00e4rt Pius and Steffi P\u00e4hn return in their Free Money roles as the couple of Taavi and Liisa. Ivo Uukkivi, Elina Masing, Edgar Vun\u0161, and Keith Siilats also feature in the movie from Rannu and T\u00f5nu Hiielaid\u2019s production firm Tallifornia. Baltic Crime is handling sales.<\/p>\n

\n\tSo, what is New Money about? \u201cIn a bid to inspire young minds about financial literacy, humble teacher Liisa and modest IT wizard Taavi agree to a tabloid interview. Their openness triggers a barrage of anonymous insults, unwanted offers, and indecent proposals,\u201d plus attracts a con artist, notes a synopsis. \u201cConfused and overwhelmed, Taavi soon regrets the morning he suddenly became a millionaire with 50 million euros in Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\u2018New Money\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\tRannu and members of the creative team behind New Money shared some funny stories from the shoot, including experiences in Miami, which features prominently in the film. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not actually a sequel,\u201d the filmmaker explained about the new film\u2019s relationship to Free Money. \u201cBut when I made the last one, I really liked those two characters, and I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them. So I wrote something, sent it to the actors, asked them, \u2018Is this a thing? Should we do it?\u2019 And they said: \u2018Sure, yeah, absolutely.\u2019 And then it kind of happened. So it was a very organic process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRannu was also asked about co-editing the new feature, sharing: \u201cI really enjoy the process, because in editing, you can make it or break it. And there are so many things that you can do in editing, especially all those micro nuances \u2013 what to focus on more, what to focus on less.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAll sorts of headaches result from the couple\u2019s sudden riches, so one key big-picture takeaway was simple for the filmmaker to highlight: \u201cOne of the themes of this movie was \u2018more money, more problems\u2019,\u201d he concluded. <\/p>\n

\n\tCould there be a third film set in the Free Money and New Money universe? \u201cA couple of good ideas are floating around already,\u201d shared Rannu, including two that would tell broader stories of two characters in the new movie.<\/p>\n
