{"id":293350,"date":"2025-11-19T13:39:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T13:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/293350\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T13:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T13:39:09","slug":"scheifele-pads-impressive-stats-in-milestone-night-for-jets-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/293350\/","title":{"rendered":"Scheifele pads impressive stats in milestone night for Jets&#8217; star"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">WINNIPEG \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/mark-scheifele\/8476460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/mark-scheifele\/8476460\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Scheifele<\/a> was the first selection made by the relocated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/winnipeg-jets\/52\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/winnipeg-jets\/52\" target=\"_blank\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Tuesday, he became the franchise\u2019s all-time leader in games played.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Scheifele, now 32, heard his name called by Jets\u2019 general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff seventh overall 14 years ago. Now, 13 years into his full-time NHL career, the Kitchener, Ont., product has surpassed his former captain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/blake-wheeler\/8471218\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/blake-wheeler\/8471218\" target=\"_blank\">Blake Wheeler<\/a>, as the player to suit up in the most games for the Atlanta Thrashers-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/winnipeg-jets\/52\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/winnipeg-jets\/52\" target=\"_blank\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Unlike Scheifele, Wheeler did play for the Thrashers (23 games in 2011), while Scheifele has spent each of his 898 career outings with the Jets. In 2023, he signed a seven-year, US$59.5 million contract to remain in Winnipeg through the 2030-31 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt kind of flew under the radar,\u201d linemate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kyle-connor\/8478398\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kyle-connor\/8478398\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Connor<\/a> said of Scheifele\u2019s accomplishment following Tuesday\u2019s 5-2 win over the visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/columbus-blue-jackets\/29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/columbus-blue-jackets\/29\" target=\"_blank\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know if other guys knew, but I kind of had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Now, just two games away from 900 in his career, Scheifele said he hadn\u2019t even caught wind of his achievement before the video message played on the scoreboard at Canada Life Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know either,\u201d he laughed, post-game. \u201cObviously, it\u2019s pretty cool. I\u2019ve been here for a long time, so I feel old some days. But it\u2019s a tremendous honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Scheifele, who has been among the league\u2019s point and goal scoring leaders all season, collected three assists in Winnipeg\u2019s win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He earned his first helper on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/josh-morrissey\/8477504\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/josh-morrissey\/8477504\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Morrissey<\/a>\u2019s fourth goal of the year in the second period, before setting up two third-period tallies. He assisted on Connor\u2019s 11th goal of the season 2:45 into the final stanza and later got the puck to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/logan-stanley\/8479378\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/logan-stanley\/8479378\" target=\"_blank\">Logan Stanley<\/a>\u2019s whose 91.1 miles per hour slap shot beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elvis-merzlikins\/8478007\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elvis-merzlikins\/8478007\" target=\"_blank\">Elvis Merzlikins<\/a> clean, sealing the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Now up to 11 goals and 27 points in 19 games, the Jets\u2019 scoring leader sits just six points back of Colorado\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nathan-mackinnon\/8477492\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nathan-mackinnon\/8477492\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan MacKinnon<\/a>\u2019s league-leading 33 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s been a pillar for this organization for a long time,\u201d Connor added. \u201cHe leads by example. He\u2019s also a very vocal, caring guy, pushing each other. He bleeds Winnipeg Jet hockey, and he wears his heart on his sleeve out there every time he steps on the ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cA pretty cool accomplishment to have that record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In those 898 career games, the 2026 Canadian Olympic Team hopeful has accumulated 347 goals, 484 assists and 831 points. He has another 26 goals and 49 points in 53 post-season outings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cObviously he\u2019s a couple of games now from 900,\u201d said head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/scott-arniel\/8445088\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/scott-arniel\/8445088\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Arniel<\/a>. \u201cAnd I know that first and foremost, that\u2019s special. \u2026 And (now) he\u2019s getting the recognition. I think people are really starting to recognize there\u2019s a really good hockey player in Winnipeg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On the other side of the ice, Columbus defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zach-werenski\/8478460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zach-werenski\/8478460\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Werenski<\/a> also collected a milestone for the visitors. With his third-period goal, the 28-year-old became the first defenceman in Blue Jackets history to reach the 400-point plateau. He now trails just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/cam-atkinson\/8474715\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/cam-atkinson\/8474715\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Atkinson<\/a> (402 points) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/rick-nash\/8470041\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/rick-nash\/8470041\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Nash<\/a> (547 points) in franchise scoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cObviously it\u2019s better when you win,\u201d Werenski said of point No. 400. \u201cBut you\u2019ve got to enjoy some of the milestones along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAnd I\u2019ve been fortunate to play with good players here on good teams. And yeah, I love it here, so I\u2019ll take the 400, I\u2019ll enjoy it.
