And <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/01\/27\/what-is-deepseek-ai-china-nvidia-openai-meta-stock-market\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/01\/27\/what-is-deepseek-ai-china-nvidia-openai-meta-stock-market\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DeepSeek\u2019s sudden rise<\/a> earlier this year showed just how quickly the balance of power can shift.<\/p>\n<p>That competition is playing out not just in Silicon Valley and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/longform\/shenzens-smart-city-technology\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/longform\/shenzens-smart-city-technology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shenzhen<\/a>, but also on university campuses. Beijing has been steadily building an AI powerhouse of its own at Tsinghua University\u2014challenging the cutting-edge tech dominance of the U.S. Ivy League.<\/p>\n<p>Tsinghua has produced more of the world\u2019s 100 most-cited AI research papers than any other school, and the university generates more AI-related patents each year than MIT, Stanford, Princeton and Harvard combined. Between 2005 and the end of 2024, Tsinghua researchers filed 4,986 AI and machine-learning patents\u2014including more than 900 last year\u2014according to LexisNexis data analyzed by <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-11-18\/china-s-tsinghua-university-is-beating-us-in-the-race-for-ai-patents\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-11-18\/china-s-tsinghua-university-is-beating-us-in-the-race-for-ai-patents\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the U.S. maintains an edge. American institutions hold many of the most influential AI patents, and according to Stanford\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/ai-index\/2025-ai-index-report\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/ai-index\/2025-ai-index-report\">2025 AI Index Report<\/a>, the U.S. has produced 40 \u201cnotable AI models\u201d compared to China\u2019s 15. However, the Chinese models have rapidly closed the quality gap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of enthusiasm for AI and machine learning within government, industry and academic circles,\u201d Jun Liu, a former Harvard professor who joined Tsinghua this year to lead the school\u2019s new statistics and data science department, told Bloomberg. \u201cThe draw of AI talent is due to capital, and the Chinese government\u2019s support for scientific research, including in AI and related areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China is building a massive AI talent pipeline\u2014and U.S. companies are tapping it<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s tech strategy doesn\u2019t start at the university level\u2014the country has begun <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/10\/china-school-children-ai-deepseek-liang-wengfeng-estonia-uk-america-south-korea\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/10\/china-school-children-ai-deepseek-liang-wengfeng-estonia-uk-america-south-korea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teaching the foundations of AI<\/a> to students as young as six. This fall, schools in Beijing rolled out at least eight hours of AI instruction per academic year, covering topics like how to use chatbots and other tools, general background on the technology, and AI ethics.<\/p>\n<p>That <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/11\/china-us-rivarly-in-the-classroom-longer-days-ai-race-trump-shifts-tone\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/11\/china-us-rivarly-in-the-classroom-longer-days-ai-race-trump-shifts-tone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">early focus has helped China<\/a> build out a vast tech workforce. China graduated 3.57 million STEM students in 2020\u2014compared with 820,000 in the U.S.\u2014according to the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/innovation-lightbulb-not-just-attracting-retaining-international-stem-students\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/innovation-lightbulb-not-just-attracting-retaining-international-stem-students\">Center for Strategic and International S<\/a><a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/innovation-lightbulb-not-just-attracting-retaining-international-stem-students\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/innovation-lightbulb-not-just-attracting-retaining-international-stem-students\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tudies<\/a>. State media has since <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/PDChina\/status\/1774715827176325294\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PDChina\/status\/1774715827176325294\">reported<\/a> that the number could exceed five million annually. (China\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.census.gov\/popclock\/population_widget_310x200.php\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/popclock\/population_widget_310x200.php\">population<\/a> is more than four times that of the U.S.)<\/p>\n<p>American tech companies have taken notice\u2014and rushed to snatch up Chinese talent. Over the summer, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meta<\/a> announced a new <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/10\/meta-zuckerberg-superintelligence-scale-alexandr-wang-ai-race\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/10\/meta-zuckerberg-superintelligence-scale-alexandr-wang-ai-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Superintelligence Lab<\/a> aimed at building a machine more powerful than the human brain.All 11 founding researchers were educated outside of the U.S.\u2014and seven were born in China, according to <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/19\/technology\/ai-research-chinese-talent.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/19\/technology\/ai-research-chinese-talent.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 Paulson Institute study found <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/09\/technology\/china-ai-research-education.html\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/09\/technology\/china-ai-research-education.html\">Chinese AI researchers<\/a> made up nearly one-third of the world\u2019s 100 top AI scientists\u2014most of whom worked for U.S. universities and corporations.
