Most families have already put their bikes away with winter approaching, but that doesn’t mean two-wheelers are gone for good. Accidents can happen year-round, and a recent incident in Biggar prompted a reminder of awareness around cyclists after a serious incident.<\/p>\n
One of two collisions making their weekly report, Sgt. Dereck Crozier shared the following from their most recent list.<\/p>\n
“The second collision involved a vehicle and 13-year-old on a bicycle at the intersection of 8 Avenue and Main Street. The cyclist was transported to Saskatoon with minor injuries.”<\/p>\n
Safety lessons are something that if taught at a young age, could stick for life.<\/p>\n
“This is a good reminder to parents to have those safety talks with young cyclists who don\u2019t always account for the two lanes of traffic moving simultaneously though and intersection and to consider walking the bicycle though the crosswalk at a busy intersection.”<\/p>\n
While that’s the case, anyone behind the wheel is just as responsible for safety on the road.<\/p>\n
“For motorists, please be extra vigilant in trying to predict the unexpected from our young cyclists, especially during the busy times when going to and leaving school.”<\/p>\n
With the winter approaching there likely won’t be any bikes to watch out for, but these year-round reminders are a good way to keep your mind right headed into the spring when kids will be eager to get back on their two-wheel freedom machines.<\/p>\n
As mentioned, that collision was one of two during the week.
