{"id":295927,"date":"2025-11-20T17:59:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T17:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/295927\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T17:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T17:59:11","slug":"affordability-crisis-can-be-fixed-through-productivity-says-bank-of-canada-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/295927\/","title":{"rendered":"Affordability crisis can be fixed through productivity, says Bank of Canada &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Canadians struggle with the high <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/cost-of-living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cost of living<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/bank-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bank of Canada<\/a> says the key to making life more affordable for the long-term is by increasing the economy\u2019s overall productivity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762614923_240_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what was described by the central bank\u2019s external deputy governor Nicolas Vincent, who gave a speech at an event in Quebec on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Vincent said that by improving productivity, Canadians would see their incomes rise while also keeping <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">inflation<\/a> low.<\/p>\n<p>Vincent\u2019s proposal suggests it may be more effective to find ways to increase the amount Canadians earn rather than focusing on lowering prices for goods, services and housing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeep down, Canada\u2019s affordability problem is really a productivity problem. \u2026 To make things more affordable, we need to raise our income. And the way to grow our income is by increasing productivity,\u201d said Vincent in his speech.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears of weak business investment means productivity in Canada is lower than it could be. When productivity is lower, wages don\u2019t rise as quickly, so household spending slows and, with it, demand for products and services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The concept behind boosting economic productivity is that if businesses and industries grow and increase their production then Canadians would earn more money from their pay cheques to better afford food, shelter and other necessities.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the thinking goes, Canadians would be able to afford current prices because while their incomes rise, increases in the prices for goods and services would, in theory, remain relatively stable.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Money<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant, sudden increases in inflation. The years of supply chain shocks since then, as the world grapples with upended trade norms and worsening climate challenges such as droughts, have caused continuing strain on consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada reported in October that <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11471463\/income-gap-canada-record-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">during the second quarter, Canada\u2019s income gap widened to a record high<\/a> amid a weakening economy, which highlights how Canada\u2019s lowest earners are not seeing their incomes rise as much as higher earners.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s productivity can be measured by <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11504318\/canada-gross-domestic-product-august-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gross Domestic Product, which dropped slightly in August<\/a>\u00a0as U.S. tariffs and trade tensions continued to slow down the economy.<\/p>\n<p>This also has an impact on the job market, with <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11516239\/canada-unemployment-jobs-report-october-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unemployment hovering around seven per cent<\/a> nationally.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'What Carney\u2019s federal budget includes for everyday Canadians'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/251104-ANNE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:13<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat Carney\u2019s federal budget includes for everyday Canadians\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Concerns about job security amid an affordability crisis are also leading many Canadians to adjust their holiday spending plans, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11526143\/consumer-holiday-christmas-shopping-plans-bmo-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bank of Montreal survey<\/a> showing 41 per cent plan to cut back on how much they will spend on gifts and holiday items.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11500713\/cost-of-living-delaying-saving-for-retirement-and-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">survey from Willful<\/a> showed 58 per cent of respondents were delaying major milestones because of the state of the economy, and 46 per cent said they had to dip into their savings to keep up with daily expenses.<\/p>\n<p>To increase Canada\u2019s productivity, Vincent recommends finding ways to make it easier for Canadian businesses and industries to grow and thrive.<\/p>\n<p>He says this can first be done by simplifying rules and implementing policies that will encourage investments to help small companies expand.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Vincent also recommends encouraging healthy competition in key sectors such as telecommunications, transportation and financial services to boost efficiency and innovation.
