An Alberta legislature<\/a> member says the province has a duty to step in to deal with \u201cbad parents,\u201d and he compares gender confirmation surgery to the castration of livestock.<\/p>\n

United Conservative backbencher, Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland MLA Shane Getson,<\/a> made the comment in chamber debate over a bill that uses the Charter\u2019s notwithstanding clause<\/a> to protect a trio of transgender laws from court challenge.<\/p>\n

One law bans gender reassignment surgery for those under 18 and prohibits drug therapies for gender reassignment for anyone under 16.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ advocates say the law is an intolerable infringement on the rights of patients, and doctors say it\u2019s a dangerous political intervention in what should be clinical decision-making.<\/p>\n

Getson says using the notwithstanding clause to override rights<\/a> in this case is necessary, because some parents need intervention to prevent them from making decisions that may not be in the best interests of their children.<\/p>\n

He gave the example of castrating a bull to make it a steer, saying once the animal is steer, there\u2019s no going back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to grow back those parts if you change your mind,\u201d Getson said late Wednesday afternoon on the first full day of debate on the bill.<\/p>\n

Premier Danielle Smith\u2019s UCP government has been criticized as having a double standard with parental direction over a child\u2019s decision-making.<\/p>\n

The government says parental rights are paramount.<\/p>\n

Getson told the house unfortunately that can\u2019t be the rule when it comes to some parents and that it\u2019s sadly reflected in social worker interventions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to defend parents\u2019 rights to the end, unless they\u2019re bad parents,\u201d Getson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve got all these other checks and balances.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that these kids \u2014 God bless them \u2014 get to a point of maturity where they can make that decision and that their parents\u2019 best intentions \u2014 or maybe not, I don\u2019t know \u2014 don\u2019t cause irreparable damage.\u201d<\/p>\n
