The next thought is how much you need to sustain yourself during retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-CGSXQXY36JA5LPURFHMLJZ4OXQ\">However, most financial experts point out that there\u2019s no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/09\/14\/end-of-service-benefits-uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/09\/14\/end-of-service-benefits-uae\/\">one-size-fits-all number<\/a>, it varies depending on lifestyle expectations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-RGFQIB3TI5FVNEBPOOHDWOCC7U\">A good rule of thumb is your desired annual income multiplied by 25. For example, if you want $40,000 (Dh146,900) a year in retirement, you will need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/10\/03\/this-is-the-age-you-should-start-saving-for-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/10\/03\/this-is-the-age-you-should-start-saving-for-retirement\/\">a retirement pot<\/a> of $1 million, recommends Josh Clancey, head of technical at Indigo Financial Analysis and Consultancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-S4NZPD7CFNEVFJIAOSUUINPT7I\">\u201cGenerally, my clients want Dh20,000 to Dh40,000 a month to retire on. This would include living in a property they own and includes insurance as well. The retirement income will generally come from rental income and\/or having a retirement pot of money that they can draw from,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-GBRHL7MSCRCF5DC2BUCFKLK76U\">Breaking it down further, Jay Adrian Tolentino, a financial coach in the UAE, instructs people to multiply their monthly expenses by 12 to arrive at their annual cost, then factor in any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/03\/27\/new-uae-savings-plan-aims-to-generate-income-in-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2023\/03\/27\/new-uae-savings-plan-aims-to-generate-income-in-retirement\/\">income they will receive during retirement<\/a> such as pensions, from business, or rental income. The remaining shortfall is what their investments will need to cover, he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-BKNHV7FGH5G6TISB4PUTAECONQ\">\u201cFor example, if you expect to spend Dh180,000 a year and receive Dh36,000 annually from other income sources, you\u2019ll need your portfolio to provide Dh144,000 per year,\u201d Mr Tolentino explains. \u201cUsing a 4 per cent withdrawal rate, that means you\u2019d target a retirement fund of around Dh3.6 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-RBEPULDMBFHH7BNVEGFMHMPGHE\">This estimate is based on the \u201c4 per cent rule\u201d that a study by financial planner William Bengen laid out in the 1990s. <\/p>\n<p>What is safe withdrawal rate?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-JLCOF5GU3JEM5AWOBVYY3XKGJY\">Safe withdrawal rate (SWR) is the percentage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/07\/salary-dubai-expat-investments-uae-financial-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/07\/salary-dubai-expat-investments-uae-financial-independence\/\">a retirement portfolio<\/a> that a person can withdraw each year without running out of money. The global SWR is 4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-RTG3J2KV3BABVOXTBVNR2BTUUE\">Most planners today use 3 per cent to 4 per cent as a safer range for annual withdrawals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/editorial\/2024\/03\/19\/health-longevity-ageing-society-science-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/editorial\/2024\/03\/19\/health-longevity-ageing-society-science-healthcare\/\">given longer lifespans<\/a> and inflation, Mr Tolentino says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-E7DPZI3QINGB5E675UJG32HVRM\">For example, if you have Dh5 million invested, a 3.5 per cent withdrawal rate gives you about Dh175,000 per year, or Dh14,500 per month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-GWNKYDESRZC6XAGAYD6E3PZ72I\">Carol Glynn, founder of Conscious Finance Coaching, suggests establishing a target monthly \u201crequired income\u201d during retirement and then working back to how much savings and investment are needed to generate that income when retired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-2LYDYMMS6NEYHKENOSEWAOP7PA\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2025\/10\/31\/uae-retirement-elderly-care-healthy-ageing-live-longer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2025\/10\/31\/uae-retirement-elderly-care-healthy-ageing-live-longer\/\">UAE\u2019s retirement visa<\/a> offers five-year renewable residency for those who qualify. Eligibility is typically based on age and meeting certain financial criteria such as savings, property ownership or regular income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-WEDVEUIBQZH7DFMWZBIWTS7QMY\">For a person to be eligible, they must either have worked for not less than 15 years within or outside the UAE, or be aged 55 or older at the time of retirement; own a property\/properties worth no less than Dh1 million; have savings of no less than Dh1 million; or have a monthly income of Dh20,000 (Dh15,000 a month for Dubai).<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-NB2E37GQUFETVFZW6XDERUUB7I\">There is no state pension for expats in the Emirates. Income must be built from private savings, workplace schemes, investments and any foreign private and state pensions earned before moving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-KGRNSZ5D75EGXFADSX4V5RQLAE\">Non-Emirati employees have their end-of-service entitlements covered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/calculating-what-is-in-your-end-of-service-gratuity-1.89088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UAE\u2019s gratuity programme<\/a>. Gratuities are lump-sum payments to which all employed residents are entitled after completing at least one year of service. The amount depends on an employee\u2019s length of service and basic salary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-UZCA3SK76RCCZH575LIU7LYECY\">But end-of-service gratuity is not a pension and is usually not enough to fund even a year of expenses. It is, therefore, important for expats to save and invest their gratuity payments towards their long-term goals, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Budget for expenses vs income<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-KK24MH4GXRHF7NFXUTNZHVSQM4\">Alex Salter, head of commercial development and senior financial planner at Metis, a DIFC-based wealth adviser, says that to build an accurate cash-flow forecast, you need a detailed summary of expenses, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2024\/04\/08\/how-the-uae-has-become-one-of-the-worlds-fastest-growing-medical-tourism-destinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2024\/04\/08\/how-the-uae-has-become-one-of-the-worlds-fastest-growing-medical-tourism-destinations\/\">private health care<\/a>, which typically increases with age. Whether a client <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/25\/uae-property-dubai-buy-rent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/25\/uae-property-dubai-buy-rent\/\">rents or owns their property<\/a> makes a huge difference as well. Being mortgage-free means your fixed outgoings are lower, meaning the income needed to retire could be less, he explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-J6ABTSIN2VHX3PEPWJPASZEOVU\">\u201cA detailed summary of all income and investments is also needed, including any state pensions you may have in other countries. Gathering all this detail and putting it on to proper projections using technology gives a very visual way of seeing wealth,\u201d Mr Salter adds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-CPBDMAFLLJD5LCVSZYG47GJEQQ\">He also recommends those planning to retire in the UAE to consider which inflation rate to use when determining how much they need. This will help ensure they do not understate the effect of inflation and, therefore, the amount they need at the outset of retirement to sustain their lifestyle over the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-28-BXWZMQKEZZBYDOWTGI4SJY44LQ\">However, Ms Glynn warns that cost of living in the UAE is higher than many \u201clower-cost retirement countries\u201d, so naturally your retirement pot needs to be larger compared to retiring in a lower-cost region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-GJA5XPOZDZEK7LBFTRDXZMBJJE\">Mr Tolentino explains that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/09\/women-traders-investors-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/09\/women-traders-investors-markets\/\">well-diversified global portfolio<\/a> earning around 5 per cent to 7 per cent per year can support a long-term withdrawal rate of 3 per cent to 4 per cent. The longer your retirement horizon, the more conservative you should be with your assumptions, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Determining factors <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-ZQKSOWUQFVAQZKWDRKOJGG3FTY\">To break it down, these include your housing choice (renting vs owning), lifestyle expectations (comfortable vs modest vs luxury), health care and insurance, cost of living, currency and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/24\/indian-rupee-remittance-uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/24\/indian-rupee-remittance-uae\/\">exchange rate risks<\/a> (if you have savings or income denominated elsewhere), length of retirement, return on investments and residency\/visa and location decisions, Ms Glynn says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-WAUP4IM3FRGGJO3HVJ7JFMRK5Q\">The higher the expected cost of living (housing + insurance + maintenance), the higher your retirement amount target must be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-TYHR76KJ75GDDFJKBREL2MONQI\">Bucket list items \u2013 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/travel\/2023\/03\/01\/six-of-the-best-cruises-departing-from-dubai-and-abu-dhabi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/travel\/2023\/03\/01\/six-of-the-best-cruises-departing-from-dubai-and-abu-dhabi\/\">a six-month cruise<\/a>, flying first-class twice a year, paying for your child\u2019s wedding, helping them on to the property ladder, buying the watch you\u2019ve always wanted \u2013 will also impact the figure needed to sustain retirement, Mr Clancey warns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-UWPEZ3Y44FFHLLYCCLDU55O5RY\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/15\/money-mistakes-uae-expats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/15\/money-mistakes-uae-expats\/\">Keeping up with the Joneses<\/a> is a genuine problem for expats. Monetary inflation is more of a concern \u2013 if inflation is running at 3 per cent to 4 per cent a year, your purchasing power is essentially halved every 18 to 24 years,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-DIEHBMRHR5G2TIP5UFYEC5RN4M\">\u201cSome people need to plan for a 40-year retirement \u2013 meaning your purchasing power will only be a quarter of what it is today [assuming inflation runs between 3 per cent and 4 per cent]. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-36-CUFL5SACXRFUDCLGAWZWTWWRJM\">\u201cPeople think keeping money in cash is the safest thing to do, when it\u2019s potentially the most dangerous.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mistakes to avoid<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-39-4YJ3SZLXG5ED7ERH5PWCVCPRAU\">The biggest mistake is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2024\/06\/18\/my-dubai-salary-i-earn-up-to-dh30000-a-month-from-investments-and-side-hustles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2024\/06\/18\/my-dubai-salary-i-earn-up-to-dh30000-a-month-from-investments-and-side-hustles\/\">underestimating the required investment pot on retirement<\/a>. Many think \u201cDh2 million to Dh3 million will cover me\u201d without modelling length of retirement, inflation and rising health costs, Ms Glynn says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-40-NV72NOVOSZH4ZNIUIDIPGCOIZU\">Other mistakes include relying on employer pension or state benefits, ignoring inflation and future cost increases, failing to save and invest early, overemphasising property as the only asset, ignoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/09\/04\/uae-expats-financial-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/09\/04\/uae-expats-financial-mistakes\/\">lifestyle creep<\/a> post-retirement and neglecting withdrawal strategy and longevity risk, she warns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-41-NGO6AMF5LRBUXNLAILR4WRH2AY\">\u201cA lot of people delay investing because they think they\u2019ll start later or once they go back home. Others keep too much money in savings accounts instead of letting it grow. Some buy expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/uae-s-new-life-insurance-regulations-are-a-win-win-for-customers-1.1097375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/uae-s-new-life-insurance-regulations-are-a-win-win-for-customers-1.1097375\">insurance-linked plans<\/a> that eat up returns through high fees,\u201d Mr Tolentino highlights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-42-62Y5CPTYQFDQXE6L4YWLCSQI5E\">\u201cAnother common mistake is not understanding how much they actually need or not factoring in all income sources and inflation. Without a clear number or plan, it\u2019s easy to end up underfunded when you stop working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-43-3JFEEA4WUVALTPWKYL4VLB2Q2A\">Mr Salter says there is no point planning for retirement in one country if you end up retiring in another. Different countries have different rules and what may have been a tax-efficient investment may now not be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-45-NNEUQM5JHJEKBAATU6IG2Z76UA\">Holding assets in the wrong currency for future spending is a common mistake. \u201cWe meet a lot of people who are planning to remain UAE residents, even after they finish employment, but their investments may be in GBP or EUR, which is opening yourself up to foreign exchange issues,\u201d he warns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-46-NO67YDMDRFDTVEZ7SVMFZM7S3M\">Don&#8217;t chase the hype and educate yourself from reliable sources, says Mr Clancey. He suggests speaking only to qualified professionals who are regulated or licensed by The Abu Dhabi Global Market, Dubai International Financial Centre, Insurance Authority or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/07\/04\/uae-investing-robo-advisory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/07\/04\/uae-investing-robo-advisory\/\">Securities and Commodities Authority<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-47-SULNUDIMHJBNVHKQ4TCVZMP5UY\">Mr Salter advises expats to ensure their estate planning is in order. Make sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/20\/investment-uae-expats-will\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2025\/10\/20\/investment-uae-expats-will\/\">have a valid UAE will<\/a> and any wills made in countries where they hold assets to ensure there is no drawn-out probate process for beneficiaries, he suggests. <\/p>\n<p>Investment options<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-49-PC7Q3FYDNRG7NLV4CBIODQ6FTM\">Mr Tolentino suggests people to start with simple, regulated options such as National Bonds or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2022\/07\/12\/stashaway-introduces-flexible-portfolios-to-give-investors-more-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/money\/2022\/07\/12\/stashaway-introduces-flexible-portfolios-to-give-investors-more-control\/\">UAE-based robo-advisers such as Sarwa and StashAway<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-50-LHZG4IOE65CQLNWJHSCYYZ4CVU\">For those comfortable investing on their own, international brokers like Interactive Brokers provide access to low-cost global exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
