Spores of moss survived nearly a year outside of the International Space Station and has returned back to Earth alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The moss survived for the nine month period and returned with more than 80% of its spores able to reproduce once back on Earth, researchers reported in a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/iscience\/fulltext\/S2589-0042(25)02088-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published in iScience;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">published in iScience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Most living organisms, including humans, cannot survive even briefly in the vacuum of space,&#8221; lead study author Tomomichi Fujita told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/space\/moss-survived-outside-space-station-rcna244507\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NBC News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fujita, professor of plant biology at Hokkaido University in Japan, said the experiment provides &#8220;striking evidence&#8221; that from Earth, at least on the cellular level, can survive the harsh conditions of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Past scientific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2019\/04\/03\/Scientists-seek-ways-to-grow-plants-for-food-in-space\/2991554254903\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:experiments focused on larger;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">experiments focused on larger<\/a> living organisms like plant crops and other bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The native Earth Moss, which was attached to the exterior of the ISS, can thrive in extreme environments both cold and scorching hot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fujita and the researcher team said the experiment can help improve the understanding of scientists of how native Earth species will survive in extreme outer space conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said the researchers expected an &#8220;almost zero survival&#8221; rate but the results were &#8220;the opposite.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In comments to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/scientists-put-moss-on-the-outside-of-the-international-space-station-for-9-months-then-kept-it-growing-back-on-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Live Science;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Live Science<\/a>, he noted that while the experiment may seem like a simple exercise testing the limits of a single species, the moss spore&#8217;s survival &#8220;could offer a biological stepping stone for building ecosystems beyond our planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nov. 21 (UPI) &#8212;
