Soundgarden<\/a>\u00a0have\u00a0said they are \u201cpretty close\u201d to finishing off their new album, featuring vocals from the late\u00a0Chris Cornell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In May, the band marked\u00a0the eight-year anniversary of Cornell\u2019s passing<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0hinting that they were working on a record of songs<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0they had written in the period leading up to\u00a0the singer\u2019s\u00a0death.\u00a0That\u00a0followed on\u00a0from\u00a0initial\u00a0reports in 2023 that\u00a0the band had settled a legal dispute with Cornell\u2019s estate<\/a>\u00a0that included the rights to several unreleased songs.<\/p>\n

Now, in a new interview with Allison Hagendorf, the\u00a0band\u00a0have given fans an update on the status of the record.\u00a0Revealing that they are working with producer Terry Date, who also helmed the band\u2019s second and third albums \u2018Louder Than Love\u2019 and \u2018Badmotorfinger\u2019,\u00a0they have said the recordings are reminiscent of the classic Soundgarden aesthetic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s very familiar elements in some of this new music,\u201d said drummer Matt Cameron\u00a0(via\u00a0Blabbermouth<\/a>). \u201cThere\u00a0was\u00a0a couple\u00a0songs\u00a0that felt like it was\u00a0kind of a\u00a0new\u00a0chapter\u00a0or it could have been a new chapter.\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really exciting to hear that.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0bittersweet, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Cameron continued: \u201cI\u2019m really excited for people to hear it, have our fans hear it. It\u2019s fun for us to be working on it. And sometimes listening to it, it\u2019s overpowering. But, yeah, I\u2019m super proud of the music that we did put together. And we\u2019re pretty close [to finishing it]. And, yeah, it is nice having Terry on board with us, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

In May,\u00a0bassist Ben Shepherd spoke about the power of hearing Cornell\u2019s vocals being brought back to life<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI can tell you, it feels good and invigorating to hear Chris singing from over that horizon and hear the mighty\u2026 mighty life, of souls sharing,\u201d he said. \u201cTo hear, as a fan\u2026 and band member, a song or two Chris brought in a few years ago turn before my very ears and finger blisters into a full blown Soundgarden tune is like feeling a glacier fall away off your chest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron made similar comments in September<\/a>, saying:\u00a0\u201cHearing [Cornell\u2019s] voice on these powerful hard rock songs is the most empowering thing in the world for me. Then I listen to his voice soloed up when\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0working on stuff, or if Kim or Ben is working on something, and it all comes back to the fact that\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0not with us and he left us in a way that has so many questions.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been gut-wrenching but at the same time very empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month,\u00a0Soundgarden\u00a0were\u00a0inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a>, with the surviving members playing alongside Cornell\u2019s daughter.\u00a0Jim Carrey<\/a>\u00a0inducted them, quipping:\u00a0\u201cWhen the Seattle music scene exploded, it resurrected rock and roll for me. When I heard Soundgarden for the first time, I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0just excited. I wanted to put a flannel shirt on and run into the streets screaming, \u2018My mother smoked during pregnancy!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
