\n\tRebel Wilson<\/a> is opening up about facing a slew of lawsuits and allegations<\/a> surrounding her\u00a0directorial debut\u00a0The Deb.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile appearing on 60 Minutes Australia, the actress reflected on how the ordeal has been like a \u201cworst nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt came out of left field these issues and yeah it was horrible to deal with and I had to try to navigate it professionally,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\n\t60 Minutes Australia had visited the set of The Deb at the time it was filming. An adaptation of an Australian stage play of the same name, Wilson\u2019s directorial debut follows a city girl who moves to the outback and helps her cousin become a debutante.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter noting that everything seemed to be running smoothly, Wilson was asked \u201cwhat went wrong\u201d to which Wilson alleged that the day prior to their set visit, she and local producers were \u201clocked in a room\u201d and \u201cforced to sign documents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWilson alleges that the drama \u201cstemmed from the U.K. producers on the film\u201d and that she was \u201cthe target of incessant bullying and harassment\u201d because she had spoken out about the \u201cbehavior\u201d of the U.K. producers.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, Wilson said that she had reported the producers when she \u201cfound out not minor things, big things\u201d related to \u201cinappropriate behavior towards the lead actress of the film,\u201d Charlotte MacInnes, and theft of movie funds. Wilson posted a video to Instagram last summer accusing producers Amanda Ghost, Gregory Cameron and Vince Holden of embezzlement and sexual harassment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI felt, in my position as director, I had to report that and the moment I did started all the kind of retaliation against me,\u201d Wilson said. The actress recalled MacInnes telling her that producer Amanda Ghost made her feel \u201cuncomfortable\u201d after asking her to have a \u201cbath and shower\u201d with her after Ghost had a \u201cmedical reaction\u201d to the cold water while filming at Bondi Beach. <\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, MacInnes has denied that account and is suing Wilson for defamation. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll I can say is she came to me, she made what I obviously inferred as a sexual harassment complaint and I had a duty to then act on it,\u201d Wilson said. She also explained that despite texting Ghost that MacInnes clarified that it was a \u201cbizarre situation\u201d and that it didn\u2019t make her uncomfortable, Wilson was trying to \u201cmaintain professional communication\u201d with Ghost, especially given the producer was \u201caccess to money for the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut at the same time, I\u2019m feeling very uneasy,\u201d Wilson added.<\/p>\n

\n\tWilson also alleges that the U.K. producers tried to siphon nearly a million dollars from the film\u2019s budget and wouldn\u2019t let the film premiere at the 2024 Toronto International<\/a> Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\tWilson said their argument that they couldn\u2019t release the film because of their ongoing issues with her is \u201cabsolute rubbish\u201d and was because \u201cthey knew it would be good for me as a first-time female director to have that profile and they blocked it as part of their retaliation against me speaking up against them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the time, Wilson had shared these thoughts on her social media saying that she saw that as her \u201cstanding up for my movie and the hard work that everybody put into it for years.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe producers eventually released the film so it could be shown at TIFF. However, they, in turn,\u00a0sued for defamation<\/a>, saying that Wilson lied in a maneuver to release\u00a0The Deb\u00a0at the coveted closing spot of the TIFF and secure a writing credit. The actress later filed a countersuit doubling down on accusations of theft and sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter a series of websites painted Ghost as a \u201csex trafficker,\u201d Wilson said she had \u201czero to do with the websites.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t even know how to create a website. I had nothing to do with what was on it,\u201d Wilson argued. When further questioned about the allegations that she pointed her followers to the websites, posted on The Deb instagram and made sure Ghost\u2019s associates were made aware of them, Wilson said, \u201cI don\u2019t have any memory of doing that, no.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s wild it\u2019s gotten to this point,\u201d Wilson said of the ongoing allegations. \u201cI think it\u2019s a ridiculous waste of the Australian legal system.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen speaking further on MacInnes, Wilson reiterated that she didn\u2019t initially identify MacInnes by name and the actress chose to make statements and identify herself. Wilson also responded to her post alleging that the actress changed her story to help further her career, noting that the actress was given the lead role in another production and has a record label all from the producer of The Deb. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI believe her only work since The Deb was a role in a stage show that Amanda Ghost produced,\u201d Wilson explained. Despite believing she\u2019s \u201ctalented,\u201d Wilson argues that \u201cit\u2019s undeniable the benefits she has received since finishing filming the film.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a situation where I was a whistleblower. I stood up when it was important to stand up and say something,\u201d Wilson said. <\/p>\n

\n\tRialto Distribution has acquired the rights for\u00a0The Deb\u00a0in Australia and New Zealand, with plans for a wide theatrical release in January.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rebel Wilson is opening up about facing a slew of lawsuits and allegations surrounding her\u00a0directorial debut\u00a0The Deb.
