The New York Mets<\/a> and Texas Rangers<\/a> are nearing a trade that will send outfielder\u00a0Brandon Nimmo<\/a>\u00a0to Texas and second baseman Marcus Semien<\/a> to New York, according to\u00a0ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Semien, 35, is coming off a relatively down season that saw him hit .230\/.305\/.364 with 15 home runs. His 97 OPS+ was his lowest mark since 2020 and his lowest in a full-length campaign since 2018. Semien does have a track record of being a strong performer, however, having tallied at least 3 Wins Above Replacement in each of his seven past full seasons.<\/p>\n

Semien is under contract through the 2028 campaign. He’ll make $26 million apiece both next season and the year after. He’ll then earn $20 million in the contract’s final season. That puts his remaining terms at three seasons and $72 million.<\/p>\n

The Mets have been reportedly open to moving second baseman Jeff McNeil. It stands to reason Semien will be the club’s starting second baseman come Opening Day.<\/p>\n

Nimmo, 32, batted .262\/.324\/.436 last season with a career-best 25 home runs. He stole more than a dozen bases for the second consecutive year. Nimmo has has tallied 2 or more Wins Above Replacement in each of the last five seasons, though his public-facing defensive metrics indicate he should probably not be deployed in center field any longer.<\/p>\n

Nimmo is under contract through the 2030 season for $20.25 million annually.
