It was previously thought to have last been active around 40 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>But a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2025GL116050\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Geophysical Research Letters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Geophysical Research Letters <\/a>earlier this month found signs of more recent activity.<\/p>\n<p>New topographic data collected from satellites, airplanes and drones showed about an 80-mile-long segment of the fault where 2.6 million-year-old and 132,000-year-old geological formations are laterally shifted across the fault.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"A fault line on the Canadian border, thought to be dormant for tens of millions of years, could cause a major earthquake, a new study has revealed (Mario Tama\/Getty Images)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/5fa3e1798f5e903816ff940f5f86e431.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A fault line on the Canadian border, thought to be dormant for tens of millions of years, could cause a major earthquake, a new study has revealed (Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe further show that the fault has not ruptured in a major earthquake for at least 12 thousand years, and could generate an earthquake of at least magnitude 7.5 in the future,\u201d the study read. \u201cThe Tintina fault therefore represents an important, previously unrecognized, seismic hazard to the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An earthquake with a 7 to 7.9 magnitude is considered major and can create serious damage, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtu.edu\/geo\/community\/seismology\/learn\/earthquake-measure\/magnitude\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Michigan Tech;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Michigan Tech<\/a>.
