{"id":304707,"date":"2025-11-24T23:22:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T23:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/304707\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T23:22:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T23:22:08","slug":"getting-canadian-citizenship-is-about-to-get-easier-for-more-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/304707\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Canadian citizenship is about to get easier for more people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Obtaining Canadian citizenship is about to get easier for more people after crucial legislation became law last week.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Nov. 20, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/canada\/canadian-citizenship-by-descent-bill-c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bill C-3<\/a>, an Act to amend the Citizenship Act, received royal assent. Also known as the \u201cLost Canadians\u201d legislation, the new law will extend Canadian citizenship by descent beyond the first generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBill C-3 will fix long-standing issues in our citizenship laws and bring fairness to families with children born or adopted abroad,\u201d stated Lena Metlege Diab, minister of immigration, refugees, and citizenship. \u201cIt will provide citizenship to people who were excluded by previous laws, and it will set clear rules for the future that reflect how modern families live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Canada has taken an important step toward modernizing its citizenship laws. Bill C-3 has received royal assent, ensuring Canadians affected by outdated rules have a fair way to pass citizenship on to their children born or adopted abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The bill will come into effect at a\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u1FKDwD9ik\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/u1FKDwD9ik<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 IRCC (@CitImmCanada) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CitImmCanada\/status\/1992021692776865983?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 22, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Essentially, the new law will automatically give Canadian citizenship to anyone who would be a citizen today if not for the first-generation limit.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/canadian-citizenship\/proof-citizenship\/application-first-generation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first-generation limit<\/a>\u00a0prevents people who were born outside of Canada to a parent who was also born or adopted outside of Canada to a Canadian parent from automatically becoming a Canadian citizen.<\/p>\n<p>Under Bill C-3, a Canadian parent born or adopted abroad will be able to pass Canadian citizenship onto their child born or adopted outside Canada on or after the law kicks in, provided they have a significant connection to Canada. That is demonstrated by at least 1,095 cumulative days (three years) of physical presence in Canada before their child\u2019s birth or adoption.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"canadian citizenship\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1075\" height=\"550\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2091041\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Dollarama-4.50-2025-01-08T094456.258.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2091041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mehaniq\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice declared the first-generation limit as \u201cunconstitutional,\u201d but suspended that declaration until Nov. 20, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa has yet to set a date for when Bill C-3 will come into force. Until then, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/canadian-citizenship\/proof-citizenship\/application-first-generation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">interim measure<\/a> remains in place for people affected by the first-generation limit.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government says the first Canadian Citizenship Act of 1947 contained \u201cnow-outdated\u201d laws that caused many people to either lose their Canadian citizenship or not receive one in the first place.
