Sigurdson.<\/p>\n<p>Petitions were also issued for Ric McIver, Speaker of the house, and Muhammad Yaseen, associate minister for multiculturalism.<\/p>\n<p>The approvals follow petitions recently approved for Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, backbencher Nolan Dyck and deputy Speaker Angela Pitt.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: '3rd Alberta legislature member, Nolan Dyck, target of recall petition'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Nolan_Dyck.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:50<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t3rd Alberta legislature member, Nolan Dyck, target of recall petition\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Nicolaides has been accused of failing to support public education while those behind petitions for Dyck and Pitt have complained about their ability to respond to concerns and address community issues.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The nine politicians represent constituencies across the province, ranging from Grande Prairie in the north to Highwood in the south. Five represent the Calgary area.<\/p>\n<p>While the reasons vary, many of the newly approved petitioners said they\u2019re upset the government used the Charter\u2019s notwithstanding clause last month to end a provincewide teachers strike.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Craig, a teacher in Calgary petitioning for the removal of Sawhney, the Indigenous relations minister, said the government\u2019s move left her feeling defeated, but it also inspired her to take action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t just let it be that,\u201d said Craig in an interview. \u201cI couldn\u2019t just stop there and not take action and change the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763808740_130_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Another common reason among applicants was that the MLAs are not responsive to community concerns or are not engaging with their constituents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite repeated outreach from community members, Yaseen has remained unresponsive and disengaged,\u201d wrote Siobhan Cooksley in her recall application to Elections Alberta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cHis actions demonstrate a lack of accountability and commitment to the people he was elected to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith and her UCP caucus have argued that petitioners aren\u2019t using the recall system appropriately, describing the concerns raised as disagreements over government policy rather than accusations of serious wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Alberta\u2019s back-to-work bill spurs MLA recall campaign'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/251103-HEATHER.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:55<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAlberta\u2019s back-to-work bill spurs MLA recall campaign\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Sigurdson, who serves as agriculture minister, repeated that argument when speaking with reporters Monday. \u201cThey are weaponizing it because they don\u2019t like the policy that was put forward by the government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI don\u2019t think that was ever what recall was intended for; it was meant for complete misconduct only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nally, the minister of Service Alberta, said in a statement to the chief electoral officer in response to his petition that he believes the constituent looking to remove him \u201cacts as a proxy\u201d for an activist group pushing for an early election call.<\/p>\n<p>Nally also cited voting records that he said show the petitioner didn\u2019t vote in the 2023 general election.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11539768\/mark-carney-donald-trump-talks\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764038532_303_570558f50c9bc21e7faaac1e327354e327b766527b3fce7fd71bcf7f95bdb2be.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tCarney says he\u2019ll speak with Trump \u2018when it\u2019s appropriate\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11540944\/polar-vortex-early-winter-canada\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764038532_982_Canada-snowstorm.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tPolar vortex set to bring \u2018harsh early start to winter\u2019 across Canada\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question then becomes how does someone who does not even vote get talked into leading a recall?\u201d Nally wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Nally\u2019s petitioner, Joshua Eberhart, disputed the voting claim and questioned how the minister managed to obtain that information.<\/p>\n<p>Eberhart also pointed out that whether or not he voted doesn\u2019t make him ineligible to lead a recall campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He also disputed the allegation that he\u2019s acting as a proxy for an organized group looking to topple the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just me,\u201d Eberhart said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cAs a taxpayer, two of the things that I value most are education and health care, and I think they\u2019re being mismanaged a little bit by our current government, which includes my local representative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked by reporters Monday to clarify his statement, Nally said he wouldn\u2019t \u201ccomment on any specifics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The petition process allows those behind each campaign to collect signatures in their constituency over three months and, if they collect enough, a vote is held on whether the MLA keeps their seat.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a long, multi-stage process. But if all nine MLAs are defeated in constituency votes, Smith\u2019s government would lose its majority status.<\/p>\n<p>The UCP has 47 members in the 87-member house.
