Following our previous visit to\u00a0Kohn Pederson Fox Associates<\/a>, we are keeping our\u00a0Meet Your Next Employer series<\/a>\u00a0in New York City this week to explore the work of\u00a0Selldorf Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Led by Annabelle Selldorf, the architecture and interior design firm has amassed a portfolio ranging from high-end residential to museums and galleries, and at scales from new construction to historic renovation. Last month, the firm was among those shortlisted<\/a> for the overhaul of the Louvre in Paris, while earlier this year Annabelle Selldorf was named among the TIME 100 Influential People list for 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Competed earlier this year, the renovation of the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London saw Selldorf update a previous design by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. The two-year process saw the ground floor expanded by 60% as well as the replacement of the glass wall framing to the wing\u2019s existing staircase. A new second-floor mezzanine also offers the museum flexibility to install new dining, retail, and bookstore spaces.<\/p>\n

Opened in April 2025, Selldorf\u2019s renovation of the Frick Collection in New York City saw the upgrading of an interior originally converted into a museum in 1930. A new education center, bookstore, new gallery rooms, a paper conservation studio, and cafe are among the additions included in the 87,000-square-foot design, which is clad in Indiana limestone. Overall, the project added 27,000 square feet of new space, with another 60,000 square feet repurposed.<\/p>\n

Completed in 2022, Selldorf\u2019s renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego doubled the overall square footage of the museum while quadrupling the gallery space. The most significant intervention comes at the southern end of the museum with a large addition using textured concrete and travertine. Elsewhere, a former auditorium space was converted into new galleries with dramatic 20-foot ceilings, while circulation and accessibility were also improved. On the building envelope, skylights and vertical windows bring natural light and coastal views into the galleries.<\/p>\n

An original 1914 Carr\u00e8re & Hastings mansion on Fifth Avenue, the Neue Galerie was renovated by Selldorf to support the display of German and Austrian art. The renovation included discreetly adding entrance ramps, integrating new mechanical systems, and reorganizing circulation without altering the building\u2019s historic proportions. Interior updates range from a rebuilt skylight that restores natural light to a new third-floor gallery and ground-floor adjustments for improved accessibility and visitor services.<\/p>\n
