Okada, also 83, is the former chairman of Tokyo-based Universal Entertainment Corp.\u00a0Nicolas Chow, Sotheby\u2019s Asia chairman and worldwide head of Asian art, told\u00a0ARTnews\u00a0before the sale that \u201cit is the most significant collection of East Asian art to come to auction in recent memory.\u201d\u00a0Utamaro\u2019s\u00a0Fukagawa in Snow\u00a0, painted in the early 19th century, was the night\u2019s top lot, selling to a Japanese private collector for $7.1 million, with more than 30 bids placed.\u00a0Hokusai\u2019s iconic\u00a0The Great Wave Off the Coast of Kanagawa\u00a0(1830\u201332) nearly tripled its high estimate to sell for $2.8 million, also to a Japanese private collector.
