{"id":30599,"date":"2025-07-29T00:25:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T00:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/30599\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T00:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T00:25:12","slug":"island-wildlife-group-mourns-death-of-beloved-white-raven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/30599\/","title":{"rendered":"Island wildlife group mourns death of &#8216;beloved&#8217; white raven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff at a wildlife recovery facility on Vancouver Island are mourning the death of Blizzard, a rare leucistic raven who was in their care for several years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Blizzard,\u201d wrote the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wildliferecoverycentre\/posts\/pfbid0P6kMv5EAi5vNz9V296us8CXfyQcfaFhfaRdUvX3Jqp2Z2gk4aN1Z9PDmewpPS9ssl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on social media<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The centre says the blue-eyed bird was not just a resident, but a symbol of resilience, beauty and connection. \u201cHis presence touched the hearts of staff, volunteers, and visitors from near and far,\u201d it said in the tribute post.<\/p>\n<p>The grounds will feel much quieter without Blizzard, whose voice was \u201cone of the most recognizable sounds\u201d on the property, according to the NIWRC.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna Smith, department lead for animal care, says the bird\u2019s death was unexpected. He had called the NIWRC home for about four years, and it\u2019s believed he was roughly one year old when he was brought into the facility\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a whirlwind. Death is something that we do deal with. (NIWRC\/Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>A bird has a roughly one in 30,000 chance of being born with leucism \u2013 a condition that results from a loss of pigmentation due to an absence of cells that produce melanin, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/white-raven-corvus-considered#:~:text=A%20bird%20has%20a%20roughly,being%20born%20with%20the%20condition.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis makes the White Raven a true oddity of the sky and worthy of the pomp and circumstance shown to them,\u201d the service says on its website.<\/p>\n<p>The condition is sometimes confused with albinism, \u201ca genetic mutation where the animal is born without the enzyme essential to produce melanin,\u201d it explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile animals with albinism usually have pink or reddish eyes, our local snowy luminary sports ocean blue peepers\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith says leucistic ravens don\u2019t do well in the wild, and summer and winter \u201ccan be hard on them.\u201d Blizzard had an enclosure protected from the elements.<\/p>\n<p>She said it was \u201cdevastating\u201d to find the bird deceased early Monday.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/common-raven#:~:text=Lifespan,or%2050%20years%20of%20age\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian\u2019s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute<\/a>, ravens in the wild can live from anywhere between 10 and 15 years, but in human captivity it\u2019s possible for them to live much longer \u2014 up to 40 or 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The NIWRC says the loss of Blizzard comes shortly after <a href=\"https:\/\/cheknews.ca\/she-would-look-right-back-at-you-staff-say-goodbye-to-elsa-the-resident-snowy-owl-of-13-years-1268525\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the passing of Elsa<\/a>, the centre\u2019s resident snowy owl of 13 years. She died earlier this month, and speaking with CHEK News, staff believed the cause was symptoms of old age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do regular check-ups on all the residents here, and there\u2019s no sign of illness or decline,\u201d said Keisha Long, an animal care technician, when asked about Elsa last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfterwards, we did an exam, and there were no signs of dehydration or starvation; we couldn\u2019t find anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ PREVIOUS: <a href=\"https:\/\/cheknews.ca\/she-would-look-right-back-at-you-staff-say-goodbye-to-elsa-the-resident-snowy-owl-of-13-years-1268525\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018She would look right back at you\u2019: Staff say goodbye to Elsa the resident snowy owl of 13 years<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The NIWRC on Monday says necropsies will be performed on both birds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the unusual timing of their deaths, our wildlife veterinarian will be performing necropsies on both Blizzard and Elsa to help determine the cause and ensure the continued health and safety of our other residents,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to share updates as we learn more. Thank you for holding Blizzard, Elsa and all of us in your thoughts during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The North Island Wildlife Recovery Association, celebrating its 40th year, operates the non-profit rehabilitation facility on eight acres in Errington, northwest of Nanaimo.
