The spaceflight would be the first of potentially two Starliner missions next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This time around, NASA will use the flight to transport cargo to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/international-space-station-retired-nasas-164205563.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the International Space Station;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the International Space Station<\/a> while conducting &#8220;in-flight validation of the system upgrades&#8221; implemented since the previous failed spaceflight, the agency said. NASA did not announce where the Starliner would launch, but the vehicle last got off the ground atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from NASA&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA and Boeing also announced plans to modify a 2014 contract that awarded the aerospace company up to six crewed flights to the orbital complex. Now, Boeing agreed to just four crewed missions with the remaining two being optional, NASA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis modification allows NASA and Boeing to focus on safely certifying the system in 2026, execute Starliner\u2019s first crew rotation when ready, and align our ongoing flight planning for future Starliner missions based on station\u2019s operational needs through 2030,&#8221; Steve Stich, manager of NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>What is the Boeing Starliner?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Boeing is developing the Starliner spacecraft with the goal of it becoming a second operational vehicle for NASA to transport crews and cargo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/international-space-station-marks-25-100549299.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:to the International Space Station;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the International Space Station<\/a>. The missions would be contracted under the U.S. space agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/commercial-space\/commercial-crew-program\/commercial-crew-program-overview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:commercial crew program;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">commercial crew program<\/a>, under which NASA pays private companies to conduct orbital spaceflights using their own commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore were selected for the debut crewed flight aboard the Starliner, which was propelled in June 2024 to the space station atop atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. Launching from NASA&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the mission was meant to last about 10 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SpaceX has already been making routine trips since 2020 to the space station under NASA&#8217;s program using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musk-hits-back-trump-132524767.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:its Dragon capsule;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its Dragon capsule<\/a>. Standing nearly 27 feet tall and about 13 feet wide, Dragon capsules can carry up to seven astronauts into orbit, though\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/crew-10-astronauts-depart-iss-160332829.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:most of SpaceX&#039;s Crew missions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most of SpaceX&#8217;s Crew missions<\/a> feature a contingent of four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Crew missions launch on SpaceX&#8217;s Falcon 9 rocket \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/science\/articles\/even-bigger-glenn-way-could-152729952.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:one of the most active in the world;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the most active in the world<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 from the Kennedy Space Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Certification of Boeing\u2019s Starliner remains important to NASA\u2019s goal of sustained human presence in low Earth orbit,&#8221; the space agency said in its recent blog post.<\/p>\n<p>What happened with Starliner? Astronauts were &#8216;stuck&#8217; at ISS<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The crewed Starliner test flight mission ended in failure when engineers discovered a slew of helium leaks and problems with the craft&#8217;s propulsion system that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/still-no-return-date-starliner-175235032.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:stalled the vehicle&#039;s return;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stalled the vehicle&#8217;s return<\/a>\u00a0to Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA ultimately determined that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/nasa-boeing-starliner-crew-remain-174506173.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:troubled Starliner capsule wasn&#039;t safe enough for a crew;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">troubled Starliner capsule wasn&#8217;t safe enough for a crew<\/a>.
