Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner took the opportunity yesterday to \u201cargue against perceptions<\/a>\u201d that the team turns a profit every year, saying it is \u201cnot fair\u201d to come to that conclusion, according to Gary Phillips of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Steinbrenner then referred to the payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) bonds used to pay for Yankee Stadium, saying, \u201cEverybody wants to talk about revenues. They need to talk about our expenses, including the $100 million expense to the city of New York that we have to pay every Feb. 1, including the COVID year\u201d (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11\/24<\/a>). Steinbrenner went on to say, \u201cNobody spends more money, I don\u2019t believe, on player development, scouting, performance science. These all start to add up\u201d (MLB.com, 11\/24<\/a>). <\/p>\n

BIG SPENDER? ESPN.com\u2019s Jorge Castillo wrote Steinbrenner \u201cclaimed it was too early in the offseason to determine his team\u2019s payroll range for the 2026 season,\u201d but he said he would \u201cprefer that the number drop from the\u201d $319M the team spent on players in 2025. As it stands, the Yankees are \u201cslated to carry\u201d a $278.1M payroll in 2026. The Yankees, who have eclipsed the CBT threshold the past four seasons, finished with the third-highest CBT payroll in the majors in 2025 — behind the Dodgers and Mets (ESPN.com, 11\/24<\/a>). Steinbrenner said, \u201cWould it be ideal if I went down (in payroll)?\u201d He added, \u201cOf course. But does that mean that\u2019s going to happen? Of course not.\u201d Steinbrenner added payroll could \u201cgo slightly down one year and then up the year after that.\u201d THE ATHLETIC\u2019s Brendan Kuty wrote while the Yankees are \u201cstill expected to chase high-priced free agents this offseason,\u201d Steinbrenner\u2019s remarks \u201csparked immediate frustration and confusion within the championship-starved fan base\u201d (THE ATHLETIC, 11\/24<\/a>).<\/p>\n

OPEN THE CHECKBOOK: In N.Y., Jon Heyman wrote Steinbrenner \u201cin so many ways beats his legendary father,\u201d George, as Yankees owner. He wrote it is almost like the younger Steinbrenner \u201cconsciously does the opposite of dad, and I think we are all thankful we won\u2019t see any nasty and public wars with star players under his stewardship.\u201d Heyman: \u201cBut now we come to the part of the year where The Boss easily beats his kinder, gentler son, and that is the spending portion of the season.\u201d It is \u201cgreat the Yankees still have their George-inspired \u2018World-Series-or-bust\u2019 mantra,\u201d but if Hal \u201creally means that, he needs to step to the plate now, and bring the green stuff\u201d (N.Y. POST, 11\/24<\/a>).
