Ontario Premier Doug Ford is threatening to audit all provincial spending to determine whether public-sector unions are \u201cfunnelling\u201d money to \u201cleft-wing radical groups\u201d that staged a protest inside the Ontario legislature.<\/p>\n

Ford\u2019s warning came one day after members of the tenant advocacy group ACORN Canada interrupted the Ontario Legislature to protest a controversial omnibus bill that increases various landlord powers and shortens some eviction timelines.<\/p>\n

As the Ford government<\/a> passed Bill 60, members of the PC caucus faced vocal criticism from demonstrators in the public galleries who shouted that the provincial law would \u201cput people on the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the government claimed the protests were anti-democratic, that the NDP invited antisemitic individuals to participate in the protest and that the government would audit left-leaning groups that receive taxpayer funding.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what else we\u2019re going to audit? All these great organizations that funnel money to ACORN, like CUPE and all the rest of them,\u201d Ford declared during Question Period.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe give money to agencies and they funnel it quietly to these left-wing radical groups and they aren\u2019t using it for what we thought they\u2019re going to use it,\u201d Ford added. \u201cI promise the NDP we will be auditing all these so-called charitable organizations that are funnelling money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Progressive Conservative MPP Tyler Allsopp also claimed the protesters were \u201cdisrupting democracy\u201d and accused some of \u201cthrowing things\u201d onto the PC caucus before being removed by the Legislative Protective Service.<\/p>\n

NDP Leader Marit Stiles quickly shot back: \u201cThis is the people\u2019s house, this is not your house. You shut down democracy, and you will see the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ford government has faced increasing pushback after shortening the fall sitting period and fast-tracking a number of pieces of legislation by limiting debate and public input.<\/p>\n

Since the legislature returned on Oct. 29, at least nine bills have been time allocated, allowing the government to limit debate time, while eight have been ordered for third reading, skipping the committee stage altogether.<\/p>\n

Those bills include:<\/p>\n

Bill 25, Emergency Management Modernization Act, 2025Bill 27, Resource Management and Safety Act, 2025Bill 30, Working for Workers Seven Act, 2025Bill 33, Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025Bill 40, Protect Ontario by Securing Affordable Energy for Generations Act, 2025Bill 46, Protect Ontario by Cutting Red Tape Act, 2025Bill 56, Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025Bill 60, Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025Bill 68, Plan to Protect Ontario Act (Budget Measures), 2025 (No. 2)<\/p>\n

While Ford has often referred to left-of-centre politicians as \u201ccrazies\u201d and \u201clunatics,\u201d his threat to audit organizations and unions appears to be a new approach.<\/p>\n

The premier later claimed he was referring to \u201cstandard operating procedure\u201d and stressed that he\u2019s \u201cnot directing anyone\u201d in the government to launch targeted audits.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just standard operating procedure that all groups get audited and make sure they\u2019re spending their money the way they said they\u2019re going to spend it,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m not directing anyone. I\u2019m going to make sure the process just continues. It\u2019s not up to me to say, \u2018Audit this, audit that.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics, however, said Ford\u2019s comments in the legislature are reminiscent of U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

In September, after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Trump threatened to target \u201cradical left\u201d organizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe continuing violence from Radical Left Terrorists, in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination, must be stopped,\u201d Trump wrote at the time on social media. \u201cI will be signing an Executive Order this week to dismantle these Domestic Terrorism Networks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liberal MPP John Fraser and Green MPP Mike Schreiner both said the threat sounded reminiscent of the president, using the \u201chammer of government\u201d to hurt political opponents.<\/p>\n

Fraser said he thought Ford\u2019s comments were reflective of where the premier wanted to take policy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he was serious, I think he\u2019s very serious about that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe often says things that he\u2019s talked about or thought about and it just came out in there and that\u2019s what he wants to do. I think that\u2019s not how you should use the power of government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stiles said she wasn\u2019t clear what Ford meant by the comment, suggesting his \u201cemotions\u201d had motivated the threat.<\/p>\n
