Sony sued China-based video game developer Tencent Games for copyright and trademark infringement on Friday over its adventure video game \u201cLight of Motiram,\u201d which it claims is a \u201cslavish clone\u201d of its own popular franchise \u201cHorizon\u201d \u2014 specifically its \u201cZero Dawn\u201d and \u201cForbidden West\u201d installments.<\/p>\n

\u201cTencent\u2019s copying of \u2018Horizon\u2019 is so blatant that the public has described it as \u2018crazy,\u2019 \u2018insane\u2019 and \u2018shameless,’\u201d the company said of Tencent\u2019s game in its suit, which was filed Friday in California\u2019s Northern District Court.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit goes on to specify that \u201cLight of Motiram\u201d includes a copycat version of \u201cHorizon\u201d main character \u201cAloy,\u201d the \u201cface\u201d of its game \u201cHorizon Zero Dark,\u201d which they say Tencent strategically used as part of their early marketing tactics as a way to confuse interested gamers into thinking \u201cLight of Motiram\u201d was the next \u201cHorizon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTencent also used its rip-off of the iconic \u2018Horizon\u2019 main character \u2018Aloy\u2019 as the centerpiece of its pre-release marketing and promotional strategy, deliberately causing numerous game lovers to confuse \u2018Light Motiram\u2019 as the next game in the \u2018Horizon\u2019 series when encountering Tencent\u2019s promotional game play videos and social media accounts,\u201d the gaming company stated.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit additionally claimed that Tencent began developing their game sometime in 2023 and crafted a young, female character with red hair, as well as tribal groups that fight for survival among \u201clarge robotic animals in a post-apocalyptic world.\u201d In addition, Sony stated that Tencent attempted pitch its own version of \u201cHorizon\u201d to the mega video game publisher with hopes of sealing a collaboration. Despite Sony rejecting the offer, Tencent moved forward with its plans anyway, the lawsuit claims.<\/p>\n

\u201cTencent was undeterred by SIE\u2019s refusal to license its Horizon intellectual property,\u201d the lawsuit continues. \u201cTencent continued secretly developing \u2018Light of Motiram,\u2019 eventually announcing a forthcoming game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sony is requesting the damages in the amount of $150,000 for each separate work in the \u201cHorizon\u201d franchise infringed or of \u201cSIE\u2019s actual damages sustained as a result of Defendants\u2019 acts of copyright infringement,\u201d and other monetary damages.<\/p>\n

Tencent has not announced a release date for \u201cLight of Motiram.\u201d Representatives for the developer did not immediately response to TheWrap\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n
