Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said Tuesday his recent reply to a question about the state of trade talks<\/a> with the U.S. \u2014 \u201cWho cares?\u201d \u2014 amounted to \u201ca poor choice of words.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre hammered the prime minister over his comment during question period in the House of Commons Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the election he promised \u2018elbows up.\u2019 After, it was, \u2018Who cares?\u2019 Before the election, he said the tariffs were an \u2018existential crisis.\u2019 Now he says they\u2019re not a burning issue,\u201d Poilievre said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is the prime minister before the election so much different than the one after?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carney walked back the comments he made over the weekend in response.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the night of the election \u2026 I made a promise to Canadians. When I make a mistake, I\u2019ll admit it. That was a poor choice of words about a serious issue,\u201d Carney said in question period.<\/p>\n

Carney said he will announce further federal help for tariff-affected sectors later this week.<\/p>\n

When he was asked Sunday during the G20 summit in Johannesburg when he last spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump, Carney said \u201cWho cares?\u201d and added he doesn\u2019t have \u201cburning issues\u201d to discuss with Trump right now.<\/p>\n

Trump abruptly ended trade negotiations with Canada last month in response to an ad paid for by the Ontario government that featured a recording of former president Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs.<\/p>\n

Carney later apologized to Trump for the ads, but trade talks are still suspended.<\/p>\n

The prime minister is considering travelling to Washington next week for a FIFA World Cup event.<\/p>\n
