{"id":307708,"date":"2025-11-26T08:13:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T08:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/307708\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T08:13:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T08:13:14","slug":"30-50-cm-of-snow-possible-in-waterloo-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/307708\/","title":{"rendered":"30-50 cm of snow possible in Waterloo Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/?zoom=8&amp;center=43.72410917,-80.28508014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">impending storm brewing on the northern part of Lake Superior<\/a> is prompting weather alerts in Waterloo Region.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada issued a snow squall watch with <a href=\"https:\/\/kitchener.citynews.ca\/weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">total snowfall amounts ranging from 30 to 50 centimetres<\/a>, for the region, but local amounts may vary. The weather agency notes that it\u2019s expected to start snowing Thursday morning to Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a special weather statement is in place for strong wind gusts, which could reach speeds of 70 to 80 km\/h.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal utility outages are possible. High-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>The wind is expected to start on Wednesday evening and carry through to Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Alberta clipper merges with low-pressure<\/p>\n<p>Natasha Ramsahai, Chief Meteorologist for CityNews, said that a <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2025\/11\/24\/polar-vortex-cold-snow-ontario-gta-toronto-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wobbly polar vortex <\/a>coming across from the Prairies, merging with an <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=alberta%20clipper#:~:text=Alberta%20Clipper,called%20a%20%22Saskatchewan%20Screamer%22.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alberta clipper<\/a>, is to blame. The low-pressure system is expected to impact communities across northern and southern Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Winter weather depends on a weak or disrupted polar vortex, she said. In this case, the disruption will\u00a0mainly be\u00a0due to something called an \u201cSSW\u201d or \u201csudden stratospheric warming,\u201d which will weaken the \u201cwind wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile spills of\u00a0cold air\u00a0at this time of year are not unusual, the \u2018SSW\u2019 event that will cause it is early for this time of year, happening only a couple of times this early in the season in the past 70 years,\u201d Ramsahai explained.<\/p>\n<p>The current La Ni\u00f1a is also playing a role in this shift to\u00a0cold weather.
