More than a year after his retirement, Andy Murray appeared in an interview with a much more relaxed atmosphere than in the post-match press conferences. The former British player has shared various posts on social media after hanging up his racket, enjoying other sports like golf.

He talks about it in this conversation, admitting that he would like to explore this sport a bit more. Murray also reveals his perspective on his farewell from the circuit and comments on his relationship with the media and pressure.

“It helped me to be ready to retire. Physically, I couldn’t play at the level I wanted anymore, and my body was telling me it was time. I felt I didn’t have much more to give. Ten days after finishing my career, I looked back and thought, ‘Wow! I can’t believe I achieved all this,'” confessed Andy Murray on the podcast The Romesh Ranganathan Show.

Andy Murray, on the pressure of sports

“Looking back, if someone had told me at 17 or 18: ‘You’re going to play a Wimbledon final,’ winning or losing wouldn’t have mattered to me. I would have just played it, but once you get there, the pressure to win and perform well is huge. If you lose a final, the question is: ‘Why didn’t you win? Are you mentally strong enough? Is your game good enough?’ There’s always pressure to perform. It’s one of the most beautiful aspects of sport but also one of the toughest.”

A new adventure in golf?

“I love golf, and if you’re passionate about a sport, I think being next to a great player in their crucial moments would be a fantastic job. Working with an elite player, you can assist with decisions, with strategy. It would be a wonderful position.”

His relationship with the media

“I was very concerned about life after tennis, but now that I’m in it… I love it. At the beginning of my career, when I tried to be myself, some things I said were exaggerated and caused controversy. It was exhausting. I lost confidence in the media and ended up closing myself off, speaking little and only thinking about playing. Today, however, the context is different.”
