North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Foundation is celebrating Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2, a global movement dedicated to generosity and community impact.<\/p>\n

This year, the Foundation is sharing Amanda\u2019s story, one grounded in resilience, community support, and the ordinary moments that hold families together. Before cancer entered her life, Amanda\u2019s world was full of movement and meaning: cheering at hockey practices, kayaking on warm evenings, baking from scratch, and embracing every chance to stay active with the people she loves.<\/p>\n

Her diagnosis came without warning. What began as a routine breast reduction suddenly revealed breast cancer, which was discovered entirely by chance, with no symptoms and no indication that anything was wrong. The news brought everything to a halt, replacing familiar routines with days filled with uncertainty, difficult conversations, and the weight of what lay ahead.<\/p>\n

In the months that followed, Amanda underwent a double mastectomy, reconstruction, 18 weeks of chemotherapy, 25 radiation treatments, and several additional surgeries. Each stage carried its own challenges and unknowns, and she faced long days of recovery as she moved through treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy boys kept me going,\u201d Amanda remarked. \u201cI\u2019ve always been independent and determined, but cancer forced me to slow down in ways I never expected. What made the difference were the people lifting us up \u2014 friends and neighbours who stepped in, and a care team at NBRHC that understood how important it was for me to hold on to the familiar parts of our life. Being able to stay \u2018Mom,\u2019 even during treatment, meant everything to us.\u201d<\/p>\n
