The green sea turtle is making a recovery. That\u2019s according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In October, it released its yearly report. This is the Red List of Threatened Species. <\/p>\n
The report says green sea turtle numbers have increased 28% since the 1970s. The IUCN has shifted the species\u2019 status to \u201cleast concern.\u201d <\/p>\n
Roderic Mast helps lead the IUCN group that studies sea turtles. He called the news a \u201cpowerful example\u201d of what conservation efforts can do. Among these efforts are the protection of sea turtles and their nests on beaches. <\/p>\n
There\u2019s worrying news, too. The IUCN report says more than half the world\u2019s bird species are in decline. Also, Arctic seals are suffering severe habitat loss. <\/p>\n
But the green sea turtle\u2019s comeback offers reason to hope. Grethel Aguilar is the IUCN director. She says the report \u201cshines a light on both the urgent challenges and the powerful possibilities before us.\u201d<\/p>\n
