But are Canadian products on the list?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/a\/assets\/texttospeech.svg\" alt=\"Text to Speech Icon\" width=\"44\" height=\"44\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Listen to this article<\/p>\n<p>Estimated 5 minutes<\/p>\n<p>The audio version of this article is generated by text-to-speech, a technology based on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Despite recent data suggesting the Buy Canadian movement is losing steam, some business owners are hopeful the boom they&#8217;ve been seeing will continue through Black Friday sales and throughout the holiday shopping season.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/buy-canadian-shopping-response-tariffs-1.7449341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">movement took off earlier this year<\/a> after consumers switched to Canadian-made products in an effort to boycott the United States following a trade war and threats of annexation from president Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But since its peak, recent data suggests the trend has fallen off. <\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/251125\/dq251125a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">latest report<\/a> found that nearly 70 per cent of businesses \u201cdid not experience an increase in sales of their Canadian products\u201d over the past six months.\u00a0Only about 13 per cent of businesses said they had seen an increase, whereas the remainder weren\u2019t sure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Experts say inflation and the removal of some of Canada\u2019s counter tariffs on U.S. products have made the items less expensive and may mean consumers are returning to old habits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofcanada.ca\/2025\/10\/canadian-survey-of-consumer-expectations-third-quarter-of-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bank of Canada survey<\/a> also found that most people said they weren\u2019t willing to pay more than an additional 10 per cent for a Canadian-made product.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to be a long-lasting shift in the general public towards prioritizing Canadian goods and services,\u201d said Fran\u00e7ois Neville, a strategic management professor at McMaster University\u2019s DeGroote School of Business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhereas that sentiment was probably at its height shortly after the initial wave of tariffs from the Trump administration, it certainly seems to have waned a little bit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unless more divisive comments come out of the White House over the next few weeks, Neville says he\u2019s uncertain whether Buy Canadian will take priority this holiday season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we think of the types of gifts that are being purchased over the holiday season, oftentimes these are the types of products that are not necessarily manufactured in Canada,\u201d he said, referring to toys that are usually made in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A sign reads 'proudly Canadian' outside of a David's Tea store.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764323108_397_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>David&#8217;s Tea is one of a handful of stores in the Eaton Centre in Toronto with signage indicating its a Canadian company. (CBC News)<\/p>\n<p>To keep up with the demand, she said they\u2019ve had to almost double their warehouse and office staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing a huge push for buying Canadian,\u201d said Brown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt certainly hasn\u2019t slowed down for us for the holiday season, and I think we\u2019re gonna see a strong December as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shop Makers president Chris Sharanewych, whose cross-Canada stores feature products made by local artists and entrepreneurs, says the company is also an exception to the statistics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year, Shop Makers has opened seven new stores \u2014 and could have opened more, according to Sharanewych.
