American virtual reality and generative AI pioneer Eliza McNitt will preside over the jury of Venice Film Festival\u2019s Immersive section, which has unveiled its selection of 69 projects from 27 countries, 30 of which are in competition.<\/p>\n
Highlights of the Venice Immersive competition include \u201cBourne Identity\u201d\u00a0director Doug Liman\u2019s upcoming XR short \u201cAsteroid,\u201d which is \u201cabout a group of strangers who risk it all by taking an old rocket to mine a near-earth asteroid for a chance at unimaginable wealth,\u201d according to its synopsis. \u201cAsteroid\u201d will launch on Google\u2019s XR app later this year.<\/p>\n

McNitt, who won the grand prize in the VR category\u00a0at Venice in 2018, is the director of the groundbreaking VR experience \u201cSpheres.\u201d Executive produced by Darren Aronofsky, the project featured Millie Bobby Brown, Jessica Chastain and Patti Smith. Her latest project, \u201cAncestra\u201d \u2014 which uses a mix of live-action performances and AI-based visuals \u2014 recently premiered at Tribeca and is produced by Aronofsky\u2019s Primordial Soup outfit, which empowers filmmakers who work with AI-based creative tools.<\/p>\n
Joining McNitt on the Venice Immersive jury panel will be Gwenael Fran\u00e7ois, co-founder of Luxembourg\u2019s Skill Lab and winner of the 2024 Venice Immersive\u00a0special jury prize for\u00a0\u201cOto\u2019s Planet,\u201d as well as French animator and installation artist Boris Labb\u00e9, whose VR debut\u00a0\u201cIto Meiky\u016b\u201d scored the Venice Immersive grand prize last year.<\/p>\n
Venice was the world\u2019s first A-list festival to launch a VR competition, debuting the section in 2017, and its Venice Immersive remains the top global\u00a0platform for immersive and XR works.<\/p>\n
The selection will be showcased Aug. 27 to Sept. 6 on the Venice Immersive Island, located on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, a short boat ride from the festival\u2019s main Lido hub.<\/p>\n
