{"id":313360,"date":"2025-11-29T00:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T00:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/313360\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T00:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T00:54:10","slug":"consumers-may-not-be-feeling-as-rosy-as-the-economy-appears-to-be-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/313360\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumers may not be feeling as \u2018rosy\u2019 as the economy appears to be &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At first glance, the latest economic indicators appear to be good: GDP was up in September and the third quarter as economic output increased.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But average Canadians reduced their overall spending and say they are planning to spend even less during the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>So how well is the economy actually doing right now?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of those cases where despite the the top line number looking pretty rosy, it\u2019s actually a pretty difficult situation, and consumers are feeling it,\u201d says Richard Forbes, principal economist at the Conference Board of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumer confidence has been basically at historic lows all year, and that\u2019s a reflection on how consumers are feeling about the overall economy and the job market and and those types of economic indicators.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Fall food report reveals affordability concerns'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/THU_GN_PIPER_SITE_THUMB_201125.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:53<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFall food report reveals affordability concerns\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11548699\/canada-gdp-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Statistics Canada reported Friday that gross domestic product (GDP)<\/a> was up more than expected in September, allowing Canada to avoid a technical recession of two straight quarters of falling GDP despite the trade war and tariff uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>There was also good news for Canada\u2019s job market with the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11516239\/canada-unemployment-jobs-report-october-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unemployment rate falling slightly in October<\/a>, and marked the first drop in three months. However, at around seven per cent, the unemployment rate is still the highest it\u2019s been in about four years, and for youth, the unemployment rate is about double the national average.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/money123.jpg\" alt=\"Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly money news<\/p>\n<p>Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>But the GDP report also showed, on a per capita basis, household spending fell an average of 0.2 per cent from July through September, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11526143\/consumer-holiday-christmas-shopping-plans-bmo-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent survey report from the Bank of Montreal shows 41 per cent of respondents plan on spending less during the holidays compared to last year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Lifestyle<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Canadians may feel they are struggling more than some of the good news in these economic reports suggest, according to some experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf, for example, you get a report that says job numbers came in really well with \u2018X\u2019 amount of jobs added to the economy and you are still jobless, it doesn\u2019t have any impact,\u201d says personal finance expert Rubina Ahmed-Haq.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, on a macro (overall) level, Canada\u2019s economy might have grown slightly, but as an individual, if you\u2019ve been seeing that every few months those same items get more expensive, this doesn\u2019t mean much to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11529097\/consumer-price-index-october-2025-bank-of-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Price Index for October<\/a> showed prices increased on average 2.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, and prices for food purchased in stores specifically increased 3.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Although the report was slightly better than September\u2019s, it still shows consumers are faced with higher prices this year than last year.<\/p>\n<p>Most economists, financial analysts and policymakers alike are trained to look beyond the headline numbers on these economic reports to see what the underlying trends are.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11547015\/molson-canada-fraud-lawsuit-managers\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764377649_2_48b62155d4f6ecce16a4b005f55bd39165e6380e989bb0ea5590cc65a776e044.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tMolson Canada accuses ex-managers of embezzling millions in fraud scheme\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11544345\/miss-universe-co-owner-arrest-warrant-jakkaphong-anne-jakrajutatip\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764377650_968_miss-universe.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tCourt issues arrest warrant for Thai co-owner of Miss Universe pageant\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake about it, the economy is in a pretty recessionary environment right now. The consumer and business uncertainty is still there because we still don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen with the U.S. trade policy,\u201d says Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of consumers have been increasing their precautionary savings, and businesses have been hesitant to hire as well.
