NASCAR Cup Series and Team Penske driver Austin Cindric made his Supercars debut Down Under in Adelaide. Still, Cindric found himself in a spot of trouble after “trying to be a hero” at the circuit’s infamous Turn 8.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old, who won one race in the Cup Series last year at Talladega<\/a>, completed a challenging 30-minute Supercars practice session that put every driver on the grid to the test. Cindric, driving for Tickford Racing’s wildcard program, is preparing for his first championship weekend in the racing series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The American showed signs of promise, but also caution, and Cindric admitted to pushing his car too far at the infamous Turn 8. “I left two and a half tenths at Turn 8, just trying to be a hero, so I did that early in the weekend. We won’t talk about that,” Cindric said.<\/p>\n

Overall, it was a solid experience for Cindric, who is excited about the rest of the week’s action. “That was a solid first day,” Cindric said to V8Sleuth.<\/p>\n

“I mean, the car looks the same as it started the day\u2026and I wasn’t last, so that’s a start. I think a few areas [there are] some big chunks [of time to find], and otherwise a lot of little stuff.<\/p>\n

“It was a good way to ease things into it, and I just wanted to do all the laps and continue to remind myself that I have all the way until Sunday to continue to improve, so try to be somewhat patient about it.”<\/p>\n

An interesting aspect of Cindric’s Supercars experience is how the corners can force a driver to overcommit. “I only find it intimidating because everyone doesn’t shut up about it. But past that, it’s a sketchy corner,” he added.<\/p>\n

“It really invites you to get back to the gas because you don’t have the revs, but it can upset the balance of the car some…. I need to remember I’m in a right-hand drive, especially through a corner like that.”<\/p>\n

Overall, Cindric sat 23rd in the timesheets. However, he did manage to go quicker than two-time champion, Jack Le Brocq. Cindric’s performance drew praise from commentators and his team.<\/p>\n

Six-time Bathurst 1000 winner, Garth Tander, had high praise for the NASCAR star in particular. “Could you imagine what the first 10 minutes of that session would’ve been like for Austin?” he said. “Information overload… Just to be able to calm yourself down and get within 1.1 by the end I think is a really commendable effort.”<\/p>\n
