{"id":313805,"date":"2025-11-29T06:06:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T06:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/313805\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T06:06:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T06:06:07","slug":"hong-kong-begins-three-days-of-mourning-after-deadly-apartment-fires-hong-kong-apartment-fires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/313805\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong begins three days of mourning after deadly apartment fires | Hong Kong apartment fires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An outpouring of grief was set to sweep Hong Kong on Saturday as an official, three-day mourning period began with a moment of silence for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2025\/nov\/28\/hong-kong-apartment-fire-response-rescue-operations-death-toll\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">128 people killed in one of the city\u2019s deadliest fires<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">City leader John Lee, along with senior ministers and dozens of top civil servants, stood in silence for three minutes on Saturday morning outside the government headquarters, where the flags of China and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/hong-kong\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hong Kong<\/a> were flown at half-mast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hours before that, citizens placed flowers near the charred shell of Wang Fuk Court, the residential complex that burned for more than 40 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMay your spirits in heaven always keep the joy alive,\u201d read a note of remembrance placed at the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Condolence points have been set up across Hong Kong for the public to sign condolence books, the government said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Families have been combing hospitals and victim identification stations hoping to find their loved ones, with about 200 people still listed as missing and 89 bodies unidentified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday, the city\u2019s anti-corruption watchdog arrested eight people in connection with the blaze, the world\u2019s worst residential building fire since 1980.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/video\/2025\/nov\/26\/several-people-trapped-as-fire-engulfs-residential-complex-in-hong-kong-video\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flames had spread quickly<\/a> through the housing estate in the city\u2019s northern Tai Po district on Wednesday afternoon, engulfing seven of the eight high-rises in the densely packed complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Authorities said the cause was yet to be determined, but preliminary investigations suggested the fire started on protective netting on the lower floors of one of the towers and that \u201chighly flammable\u201d foam boards, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/26\/bamboo-scaffolding-may-be-to-blame-for-spread-of-hong-kong-tower-block-fire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bamboo scaffolding<\/a>, had contributed to its spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The fire services chief, Andy Yeung, said they discovered that alarm systems in all eight apartment blocks \u201cwere malfunctioning\u201d, and vowed action against the contractors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Residents had told Agence France-Presse they did not hear any fire alarms and went door-to-door to alert neighbours to the danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A man surnamed Fung said he was visiting the housing estate daily to look for his 80-year-old mother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cShe is on antibiotics &#8230; so she is always sleeping. There was no fire alarm, so she might not have known there was a fire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The city\u2019s anti-corruption watchdog said the eight people it arrested on Friday included \u201cconsultants, scaffolding subcontractors and [a] middleman of the project\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Thursday, police said they arrested three men on suspicion of negligently leaving foam packaging at the fire site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday, dozens were still in hospital, with 11 in critical condition, and 21 listed as \u201cserious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe do not rule out the possibility that police will find more charred remains when entering [the building] for detailed investigation and evidence collection,\u201d the security chief, Chris Tang, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At one hospital, a woman surnamed Wong was looking for her sister-in-law and her sister-in-law\u2019s twin, with no luck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe still cannot find them,\u201d the 38-year-old said. \u201cSo we are going to different hospitals to ask if they have good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government said police have activated a specialist disaster victim identification system to help locate the missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOne building went up in flames and it spread to two more blocks in less than 15 minutes,\u201d a 77-year-old eyewitness surnamed Mui told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was burning red, I shudder to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The blaze was Hong Kong\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/27\/anger-hong-kong-apartment-complex-fires-deaths\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deadliest since 1948<\/a>, when an explosion followed by a fire killed at least 135 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lethal fires were once a regular scourge in densely populated Hong Kong, especially in poorer neighbourhoods, but improved safety measures have made them far less common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tang said the full investigation into the fire\u2019s causes could take up to four weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Authorities had found temporary accommodation for around 800 people, the government said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nine emergency shelters were also in operation, accommodating about 720 people overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2025\/nov\/28\/hong-kong-community-groups-deliver-aid-to-survivors-of-wang-fuk-court-fire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A spontaneous community effort<\/a> to help firefighters and those displaced has become a well-oiled machine.
