Team Penske star Austin Cindric is making the most of his NASCAR Cup Series offseason by competing in the final trio of Supercars Championship races in Australia with Tickford Racing in the No. 5 Ford Mustang wildcard entry.<\/p>\n

Cindric\u2019s first competitive taste of action in the rapid No. 5 Ford<\/a> came on Thursday (local time) for first practice at the bp Adelaide Grand Final<\/a>. The three-time Cup Series<\/a> race-winner came home a respectable 23rd via a performance that caught the eye of teammate and 18-time series race winner Cam Waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it’s an awesome start for him, obviously he had a plan that he had to stick to in that session, and he did that,\u201d Waters said, via Supercars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the great thing for him this weekend is that he’s got multiple sessions to build up to it, go through data, get back in the car. We went and did some testing at Tailem and he was really good around there straight off the bat. I think he’s going to surprise a fair few people this weekend, and we’ll see how he goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garth Tander, a former Championship winner, also liked what he had seen from Cindric both at practice and days prior when testing at Sandown.<\/p>\n

\u201cI followed Austin on the Monday at Sandown, after the ride day. It was about half an hour of running, so he was pretty new to the car, new to the track, and he was on it straight away,\u201d the 58-time race-winner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI followed him for a couple of laps, and he let me past, and then I went and had a chat to him about the kerb usage and being more aggressive with the kerbs, because that’s the sort of thing you need to do here at Adelaide.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to get the car on top of the kerb, not just on the ramp of the kerb, but he was putting the car in all the right spaces, he was right foot braking right from the start.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis throttle application was nice, there was no wheelspin, and I knew straight away as soon as I followed him, within half an hour of driving this car, he was going to be good. He was certainly not going to disgrace himself.\u00a0To finish 1.1 away after the first half an hour, could you imagine what the first 10 minutes of that session would’ve been like for Austin? Information overload.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, ‘What is going on?’ I’m on the wrong side of the car, everything’s wrong.’ Just to be able to calm yourself down and get within 1.1 by the end I think is a really commendable effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

After finishing 25th out of as many entrants in practice two on Friday, Cindric qualified 24th for what ended up being a rain-shortened race. The 27-year-old fought his race at the back of the pack, doing his utmost to keep well\u00a0out of the way of the final four competitors for the championship<\/a>: Broc Feeney, Chaz Mostert, Kai Allen, and reigning champion Will Brown, although he and Brown raced side by side for some time after he plummeted down the pecking order early in the race.<\/p>\n

The race wound up being red-flagged after just 21 laps, following a heavy shunt into the barrier from Thomas Randle, which saw the field brought into the pit lane, before heavy rain eventually brought proceedings to a permanent end.<\/p>\n

The race was won by Brodie Kostecki with Mostert in second, with title rivals Feeney in fourth, Allen fifth, and Brown in ninth. Feeney now leads the championship by just 13 points above Mostert, with Brown 48 points behind and Allen 53 points down on the leader.<\/p>\n
