Ruth Negga (\u201cLoving,\u201d \u201cPreacher\u201d), Aubrey Plaza (\u201cAgatha All Along,\u201d \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d) and Paapa Essiedu (\u201cThe Lazarus Project,\u201d \u201cThe Outrun\u201d) have all joined the cast of Michael B. Jordan\u2019s new \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair\u201d at Amazon MGM Studios.<\/p>\n

The trio join Kenneth Branagh, Adria Arjona, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asb\u00e6k and Aiysha Hart in the film, which Jordan directs, produces, co-writes and stars in the story of an insurance investigator (Arjona) working to track down the perpetrator (Jordan) of a heist.<\/p>\n

Jordan himself revealed the additional casting in a new Variety<\/a> interview, revealing he just got back to the United States from the UK this week.<\/p>\n

He also says it\u2019s the John McTiernan-directed 1999 remake, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, that was the much bigger influence for him than the Norman Jewison-directed 1968 original which he only caught up with much later. He explains his goal with the new version:<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved the 1999 version as a kid \u2013 Pierce Brosnan, the slickness, the art. I didn\u2019t grow up going to museums, so that film showed me a different side of New York. My mom\u2019s an artist \u2013 so I was raised around paints and leather dyeing. It shaped my taste more than I realized.<\/p>\n

Later, I saw the 1968 Steve McQueen version \u2013 the split screens, the style. After \u2018Creed,\u2019 MGM asked \u2018what I wanted to do next\u2019. I said, \u201dThomas Crown Affair.\u2019 I need that.\u2019<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t have too much baggage. It was just enough time and a gap between generations that I felt like it was almost an original story without its IP, but it\u2019s not James Bond with crazy expectations, where no matter what I do, people are going to criticize it.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination. The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn\u2019t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance. Ruth [E. Carter, costume designer] is the queen. We\u2019ve got an incredible cast.\u201d<\/p>\n
