Readers in the US eyeing Apple’s most premium smartwatch might be wondering, how much difference is there between Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3? And is that difference worth $100?<\/p>\n

Both have Cyber Monday deals: Amazon has $100 off Apple Watch Ultra 3<\/a>, which was released in September, while Best Buy has $200 off its predecessor<\/a>, which came out in 2023.<\/p>\n

I see the newer watch as very much an iterative update. The main difference is SOS satellite on the Ultra 3, plus a bigger battery, which Apple says can last 48 hours, rather than 36 on the Ultra 2.<\/p>\n

That might give the newer watch a slightly longer lifespan too, but other than that the only difference is a very slightly larger and brighter display.<\/p>\n

I’d be tempted to save an extra $100 with the Ultra 2 deal at Best buy.<\/p>\n

I’m afraid not. In the last five years, I’ve never seen Apple run a direct Cyber Monday discount (or Black Friday discount) on any of its products. What it does offer are gift cards towards future purchases.<\/p>\n

When it comes to Apple Watch, it’s offering a gift card worth up to $50\/\u00a340 if you buy an Apple Watch 11 or Watch SE 3 via Apple’s own online store<\/a><\/p>\n

That’s not a good deal for customers in the US, where Best Buy and Amazon have direct savings of $50 to $60 of the latest Apple Watches. It’s a bit more attractive in the UK, where there’s only \u00a320 off these watches at third-party retailers.<\/p>\n

TLDR: Don’t bother with Apple Watch Cyber Monday deals if you’re in the US. They’re worth considering in the UK if you’re sure that you’ll use them.<\/p>\n

I’ve never tried the Apple Watch Ultra range. But if you’re someone who does a lot of exploring outside, you go off-grid a lot or you deep sea dive, you might want to consider this powerful, premium option.<\/p>\n

There are offers on the Ultra 2 and the Ultra 3 \u2013 quite good ones, actually, on the 2.<\/p>\n

Get Ultra 2 with $200 off, now $599 at Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n

Get Ultra 3 with $100 off, now $699 at Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n

But what’s the difference?<\/p>\n

The Ultra\u202f3 keeps the same rugged 49\u202fmm titanium build as the Ultra\u202f2 but improves the screen: it uses a new wide\u2011angle OLED panel that stretches closer to the edges, giving a slightly larger, more readable display even at steep angles, ideal for glancing outdoors, while retaining the same max brightness.<\/p>\n

The chip moves from the S9 to the newer S10 chip and doubles storage, which helps with smoother performance and more room for apps or offline maps. Battery life sees a small bump, from roughly 36\u202fhours to 42\u202fhours in normal usage, and charging is faster. The biggest practical leap is connectivity: Ultra\u202f3 introduces 5G support and, for the first time, satellite messaging and Emergency SOS, making it far more useful for off\u2011grid adventures.<\/p>\n

Health and wellness features are enhanced too, with new tools like hypertension alerts and a daily sleep\u2011score system building on Ultra\u202f2\u2019s existing sensors. In short, Ultra\u202f3 refines and expands what Ultra\u202f2 already does, better screen, better connectivity, a modest battery bump, and extra health\/safety features, rather than reinventing the watch from the ground up.<\/p>\n

And then. Then I decided to upgrade to the 11. It has extra features like Hypertension detection, but I still just like that it charges even faster. And the battery lasts almost two days since I don’t sleep in it. I love Shazam, I love the new Liquid Glass style screen. And I use a few of the apps. But still, fitness is the main thing I use it for.<\/p>\n

Ooh, I also like being able to shake my wrist to make the notifications disappear without having to look at it. That makes me feel wayyyyy less rude.<\/p>\n

That’s it really. But I still really, really like it. I just am not the target market for the fancy features.<\/p>\n

So then I lived with the Series 10 for a year. It was a 46mm which was a bit big on my wrist, tbh, but I did like it. I used exactly ZERO of the extra features. I don’t use it for sleep because, children, and I’ve just never used anything else.<\/p>\n

But, as I said, it charges fast. Which is good. Fast is good. But i could have stuck with the SE2.<\/p>\n

However, if you’re more engaged than me then I guess you would use them. It does a lot of things.<\/p>\n

I also liked the fact my Watch had its own data plan, and I could go out running…. okay, okay, jogging… without my phone. I could also leave my phone in a different room. What a revelation.<\/p>\n

I did hate that I’d turned into one of those obnoxious people who glances at their watch while they’re talking to you (I still think they’re bored not just looking at a notification). But I was willing to look past that.<\/p>\n

Anyway, I was chugging along happily with my SE2 for two years, when I decided to upgrade to the Series 10. I was intrigued by it, but cynical. I don’t climb mountains so I didn’t think I needed any of the outdoorsy features of the Ultra (or even the Series 10 to be honest), but my watch was 2 years old and I thought… why not?<\/p>\n

As it turned out, I was surprised by how much I liked it. And it was only better for two basic upgrades: a bigger screen, and the fast charging. Fast charging makes SUCH a difference with an Apple Watch \u2013 even though I don’t wear it for sleep (more on that later).<\/p>\n

So I thought it was worth it, on balance.<\/p>\n

Maybe my journey will convince you to buy one, maybe it won’t. But either way I’m going to tell you it.<\/p>\n

I first tried the Apple Watch SE2, which was released in 2022. I got it because I got my first ever iPhone, which happened because I got a MacBook. And thus, I was trapped in the Apple ecosystem and remain there now.<\/p>\n

The fitness features were the first thing that got me. My friend was a bit obsessive over them, and I joined her with waving my arms in the air, jumping up and down to try to close my exercise and move rings at the end of the day. There’s no dopamine surge like that triple activity ring burn, and that gamification is genius in terms of getting people hooked.<\/p>\n

I have a Peloton, and it links up beautifully to the Apple Watch, which was the second thing. The Watch keeps me accountable to.. well, myself I guess. In truth, I’m not sure how much difference it makes to what I’m actually able to achieve in the day, but it feels good when I happen to do well and my rings light up.<\/p>\n

Plus, a heart rate monitor when on the bike actually does make a difference to how hard I work.<\/p>\n

So that’s fitness benefits out the way. And all of that is nicely served with the SE2, my first watch. Which is currently a ridiculous $129 at Walmar<\/a>t. For what you get, I actually think that’s still an ace deal.<\/p>\n

I’ll be honest, it took me a while to be convinced by the idea of a smartwatch at all. I always thought they were a bit, well, pointless. Like, I’m not going to do any more steps just because I’m being tracked. And why would I need messages to come through to my watch, I have a perfectly good phone.<\/p>\n

Cut to today, when I find myself pacing my house endlessly to close my move ring, and I struggle to see the point of exercising if my wrist is bare.<\/p>\n
