Vanessa Clements never pictured herself becoming a reality TV competitor, let alone one featured on one of Netflix\u2019s biggest shows.<\/p>\n
But this year, the lobster fisher from western P.E.I. found herself on the second season of Squid Game: The Challenge.<\/p>\n
Not only did she appear on the show, she made it all the way to the top four. Clements also competed on Big Brother Canada in 2020, though that season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

From western P.E.I. lobster fisher to Player 17 \u2014 Islander Vanessa Clements joins us to talk about her experience on Squid Game: The Challenge and her final moments on the show.<\/p>\n
Squid Game: The Challenge is based on Netflix’s hit South Korean drama series. The reality competition brings 456 players together to live in a dorm-style setting and compete in childhood games for a prize of $4.56 million US.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition to the amazing prize amount, the way my Big Brother season ended with COVID and it just kind of getting ripped away from me in that way, I think I just wanted to do something again and see it through to the end and see how I could do,\u201d Clements said.<\/p>\n
Fighting for a spot in the final four<\/p>\n
Clements was the only Canadian to make the finalists list this season, entering the top five before one contestant chose to go home, placing her in the final four.<\/p>\n
The four then went on to compete in Red Light, Green Light \u2014 the game with the giant doll that calls \u201cred light,\u201d forcing players to stop abruptly, with any movement leading to elimination. Clements was the first to be eliminated.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou’re never just living in the moment and having fun. You’re constantly wondering what’s up next, for sure. You don’t know what game is coming or what twist is going to happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to create alliances, but you don’t want to create too many because people will see that and think you’re doing too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said forming alliances often came down to reading people during their time together in the dorm.<\/p>\n
“A telltale sign for me is that they would never ask a question about me. It would always just be about them. Anytime I would talk with somebody, you could kind of get a sense if they were up to no good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although she didn\u2019t walk away with the grand prize, she said finalists do receive compensation for making it that far. Despite the pressure, she said the production was \u201ca completely immersive experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people think we went to a hotel afterwards. No, we lived and slept there,” Clements said. “We ate in the dorm, we showered in the dorm.”<\/p>\n
Future possibilities<\/p>\n
Since returning to P.E.I., Clements said the attention has been \u201coverwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s overwhelming in the best possible way,\u201d she said. \u201cEven just going to the grocery store is like a half-hour thing, because all these people want to ask me questions or whatever, and it’s a blessing. I honestly love it.\u201d<\/p>\n
One question people keep asking her: what\u2019s next?<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was final four in Squid Game, I was like, \u2018If I win, I’m definitely going to retire my reality TV career.\u2019 But now that I didn’t win, I think it opens up for the possibility of doing another one.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clements said Survivor and The Amazing Race are at the top of her list.<\/p>\n
