{"id":316548,"date":"2025-11-30T14:22:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T14:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/316548\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T14:22:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T14:22:11","slug":"london-museum-docklands-opens-art-show-celebrating-romani-culture-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/316548\/","title":{"rendered":"London Museum Docklands opens art show celebrating Romani culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764447970_873_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ea868c60-cad0-11f0-8c06-f5d460985095.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"London Museum A mannequin displays a red, ribbon-covered dress with circular patches next to a glass case containing glittery red shoes and colourful socks.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>London Museum<\/p>\n<p>Art by Delaine Le Bas at the Reflections Room<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A new exhibition honouring the creativity, craft and resilience of Britain&#8217;s Romani communities has opened at London Museum Docklands in West India Quay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The display, titled By Appointment Only, showcases three British Romani artists and their pieces which aim to challenge stereotypes and foster better understanding and connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Romani communities were first recorded in Britain in the early 1500s, but as recently as the 1990s it was still common to see signs in pubs and restaurants reading: &#8220;No travellers or gypsies allowed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This phrase later evolved into &#8220;Travellers by appointment only&#8221;, which gives the art exhibition its title.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764447970_873_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1d1f81e0-c9f5-11f0-a892-01d657345866.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"London Museum A woman with bright red hair, a black top and denim dungarees works on a peach coloured piece of art which involves a silk-like peach-coloured material and pearls. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>London Museum<\/p>\n<p>Artist and co-founder of the project Corrina Eastwood in her studio<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Co-curator and artist Corrina Eastwood described working on the project as a &#8220;really important personal and professional journey&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said: &#8220;The desire to adequately honour self, family, community and culture has been a moving and at times overwhelming experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Yet we have been able to address this by weaving together shared histories, gathered through traditional archiving and an art-based approach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ms Eastwood&#8217;s piece, titled Sugar Coated, reflects on her heritage and memories of her late father, incorporating 3D-printed casts of his hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Another piece, Tap Your Heels Together Three Times, by Delaine Le Bas, explores belonging, gender and modernity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ms Le Bas draws on her family history and Romani traditions such as rag-and-bone dealing &#8211; where dealers collected unwanted household items like rags, bones and scrap metal to sell for recycling.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764447970_873_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/93a1ca70-ca00-11f0-9fb5-5f3a3703a365.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"London Museum A man with black glasses and wearing a brown gilet holds a handmaid craft. He holds a hand out and appears to be explaining something. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>London Museum<\/p>\n<p>Artist Dan Turner at his studio<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">South-east London artist Dan Turner examines the relationship between Romani and mainstream British culture in his work, including traditional Romani crafts once sold door to door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Alongside the art pieces, the display includes a Historic England film titled Searching for Romani Gypsy Heritage, created by award-winning filmmaker John-Henry Phillips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The film traces the history of Romani communities from 500AD up to 2022.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764447970_873_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/b7029cb0-cad2-11f0-9fb5-5f3a3703a365.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"London Museum The entrance to the Reflections Room with By Appointment Only printed on the white back wall.
