He is wearing oval glasses and smiling. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Private collection<\/p>\n<p>George Shaw is described as one of Birmingham&#8217;s &#8216;most overlooked innovators&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A little-known Victorian scientist, who helped shape the future of photography, is being recognised in a new exhibition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">George Shaw is one of Birmingham&#8217;s &#8220;most overlooked innovators&#8221;, according to the organisers of the city-centre display. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Shaw not only created the first photograph in the city but also championed education, playing a key role in establishing the city&#8217;s first free public library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The showcase features reproductions of rare images and archive materials, including recently unearthed daguerreotypes \u2013 among the earliest examples of modern photography.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764530833_399_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0f8c1fa0-cc40-11f0-a666-77ae802e0cf4.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Private Collection A black and white image of New Street captured on a daguerreotype, it shows shop frontages with canopies as well as horses and carts\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Private Collection<\/p>\n<p>The photographer captured this image of New Street in Birmingham city centre <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Artist Jo Gane, from Nuneaton in Warwickshire,  said she had worked with the late Birmingham Library curator of photographs, Pete James, to research Shaw&#8217;s life and introduce the city to his story. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Shaw made the first daguerreotype photograph in Birmingham within two days of the announcement of photography in France, in August 1839,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The professor of chemistry was the &#8220;right person at the right time&#8221; because he had knowledge of how chemicals behave, she explained, bridging science, art and industry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Also a patent agent, he was &#8220;really plugged in to manufacturing and scientific advances in industry in Birmingham&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764530833_399_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/71d18300-cc3e-11f0-a666-77ae802e0cf4.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Private collection An early black and white image of four figures. invented by Louis-Jacques-Mand\u00e9 Daguerre &#8211; are images made on copper plates coated with silver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s where industry in Birmingham was really important, because of the innovation in the manufacture of silver plate in the city,&#8221; in ideas about education for all, and was the vice president of the Mechanics Institute in the city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Friends with prominent city landscape painter, Frederick Henry Henshaw, the pair went on sketching and photographing visits together, Ms Gane explained.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Shaw&#8217;s scientific work earned praise from Michael Faraday, and he lectured at the Royal Society on photographic techniques.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I think he&#8217;s been forgotten about because of the breadth of his work, as an artist, chemist and photographer,&#8221; said organisers<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Designed by Stacey Barnfield, Ms Gane developed the free exhibition in partnership with the Colmore BID team. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It can be seen at the West Midlands Metro Town Hall stop until January. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The photographer&#8217;s story is a &#8220;powerful reminder of Birmingham&#8217;s legacy as a city of innovation and creativity, said Melanie Williams, the BID&#8217;s board director. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It not only celebrates a largely unrecognised pioneer, but also invites the city to better reflect and respect its rich industrial and artistic heritage.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Vanessa PearceWest Midlands Private collection George Shaw is described as one of Birmingham&#8217;s &#8216;most overlooked innovators&#8217;
